Hi everyone,

We’re considering developing a fuel filler lock cap for vehicles and wanted to get your thoughts.

  • Do you think a lockable fuel cap would be useful?
  • Have you ever had concerns about fuel theft or tampering?
  • What features would you like to see in a product like this?

Your feedback would be extremely helpful as we plan this new product. Any suggestions, ideas, or concerns are welcome!

Thanks in advance for your input.

For me, NO, I’m also not a fan of the push button to open. Montana winters tend to be cold and snowy.

Not sure what the other trims have, but the Pro has a gas filler release inside the cab. It would be redundant to have both. If I was truly worried, I would get a locking gas cap off the shelf of my local parts store.

Maybe it changed for the 25 model year... But my 24 TRD OR has no protection. Regular unsecured flap with a finger slot, and no locking cap.

Some type of lockable door/flap or locking gas cap could be useful, if executed well and good quality.

Yes, I have had theft concerns.

Features:

Fuel door: secure, clean/sleek looking (no gaudy fake bolts like on the example door pictured), matte black to match the TRD fender flares and other exterior plastic.

Cap: work with the EVAP system to not cause codes.

No,
The harder you make it, they'll just go after more destructive means... IE: cutting hoses or drilling holes in tanks.

My office fleet has been hit so many times I have replacement hoses I keep. Our cargo van, which had a "lock", they just cut into the filler hose and put a hose to siphon out of. Caught the whole thing on video... guy had a pump and pumped it directly into his vehicle... and an aux tank in his trunk.

Cost $500 to drop the tank and replace the hose...

Basically let them siphon freely... it's cheaper to replace a few gallons of gas then $500+ in damage repair.

My 2024 Tacoma TRD Off Road i-FORCE MAX Has a button release on the dash. Cap holder on the inside of the door also. Must just be difference of the Hybrid.

Well damn. I guess the difference is hybrid vs regular engine. Crazy, I had no idea.

I don't know about the Tacoma's specifically, but lots of newer vehicles have a block inside the filler neck to prevent fuel siphoning. For example, it's practically impossible to get a hose down the filler neck on my son's 2007 F150 (it's technically possible with a very small hose and perfect placement, but not easy)... so the thieves drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom of his tank and stole all the gas anyways. No locking cap needed.
