A very interesting video. I'm of the mindset that Toyota just wants us to get past the warranty with little fuss, hence the 10k oil change. I just did my 5k myself after the dealership refused to do it. They told me to come back at 10k. I'm reading a lot of experts are advising against that if longevity and reliability are are aims. What do you guys think?

This has been well discussed. Oil is cheap insurance. Do it at 5k for peace of mind.

I brought my truck in for the free 5k "service" and they also did the trailer blind spot upgrade. I asked them to do the oil and they said since it wasn't a part of the 5k service they could do the 10k service then, or I could pay for it. I decided to pay for it and they gave me a little discount. Ended up cheaper than a quick lube place.

Are they refusing to do it? Or refusing to do it for free?

Dealer I went to used my free "10k Oil Service" at ~850 miles. It's all dealer dependent really.

I have to laugh at the 'cheap insurance' and 'peace of mind' claims. Peace of mind from what, just following the manufacturer's recommendations?

Sorry man, you just don't get it? That's okay, it's your money.

I think the dealer is being a jerk. There are a certain number of oil changes they will give you within the 24-month timeframe provided you’re not over the maximum miles. My Acura dealer was willing to do a break-in oil change very early for me and explained that is how everybody is doing it.
One would think it’s in Toyota’s interest to do a break-in oil change if customers request so they have fewer failures under warranty. And happier customers.

Peace of mind knowing you're doing what you can to extend the life of your investment.

And to be pedantic about it, the manufacturer does recommend 5k oil change intervals for "severe" cases like towing or dusty conditions. So rather than try to calculate exactly where you fall in that range, why not just err on the side of caution? Why buy a new truck and bawk at the idea of maintaining it as best you can?

Engine technology (and oils) have improved dramatically over the past two decades. I agree it feels odd seeing such lengthy intervals (compared to the old 3k miles), but they're designed for it!

And stop/go traffic, and short trips, which everyone does.

Basically everyone should be doing 5k intervals.

No way the 0w maintains it's viscosity to 10k. 5k though? I really doubt it's viscosity has changed by 5k miles.
