Highway speed is a big factor. Any vehicle will have a dramatic drop in fuel mileage above 60 mph because aerodynamic drag increases fast at speeds above 60.

Of course we never drive that slowly, but it is likely that the EPA tests were done at a speed lower than the freeway speeds on our roads today.

I think EPA estimates are done at an unrealistic 55MPH, and I suspect on a dymo or windless conditions. This is my suspicion and I haven't researched how they do their estimates.

@goin2drt I agree. Before displays shoved mpg data in your face I never even checked my mileage in my cars/trucks. I have watched those threads for a lot of vehicles and they at least are funny!

I have never really understood the purpose of doing that. If it gets a bit less than you expected are you going to lose thousands of dollars by selling it and buying something else?

I've always checked my gas mileage as it can be used as a gauge of something going wrong with the engine such as spark plugs or air filter needing changing.

I use cruise all the time even around town. I think the hyper mile guys also probably don't use the AC and just run the vent. I use the AC set to 72.

My AC is on all the time mostly bc I live on the Gulf Coast. If the heat don't get ya, the humidity will!1 LOL!

Yeah my SR5 was showing 24mpg (flat indiana hwy driving) but the gps speed was of by 5mph at 65mph using the my gps to monitor speed vs the speedometer. I went up 2 sizes on my tires and now the speedometer matches the gps speed but my mpgs are 14.5 and I drive like a grandpa. It's seems that toyota did some sketchy stuff to get the reported mpgs out of this truck.

I noticed the speedometers on the 2 Tacos, a 2020 and now a 2025, I've owned read 2 MPH lower than what my GPS says starting at about 65 MPH. Both had/have stock tires. This will have a marginal effect on the odometer reading, thus affecting mileage calculations.

17k update numbers for my 2024 Offroad Premium 8 Spead Automatic
Displayed MPG average 19.1, calculated average is 19.34
Average Speed 31.72, most of my miles are commute in heavy traffic and 75MPH in no traffic
Average miles per tank is 262 with 37 range miles remaining
Average fil-up of regular unleaded 13.56 gallons @$4.48 a California gallon
Average drive time per fill-up is 8.3 hours
Lowest range left fill up was -3 miles with a fill-up of 15.769 gallons that trip
Highest fill-up was 15.83 gallons with 0 miles range remaining
Average range left fill-up is 37 with 13.56 gallons average fill-up.
908 gallons used so far for a total of $4,002 spent since i purchased the truck in early February 2024. No issues to report, two recalls awaiting my next service. I change the oil every 5k miles that the dealer doesn't. Dealer only changes oil every 10k.

There's been some MPG talk in this thread, but can the other 2024 Tacoma owners report here what kind of MPG you're getting?

I know everyone's still in the first few weeks of owning the truck, but curious if you're all seeing above or below EPA rating so far.

all trucks will be different since we lift and have different tire sizes. Even if it says we are getting a certain mpg, it’s not gonna be exactly what it tells us because of it.

I have 285/70/17 on the stock height and in eco it says I get 18.5 mpg.

Approaching 12k miles. Computer calculates me at 18.2mpg and my math says 18.5mpg. I’m all stock right now although I’ll be adding sliders and a steel engine plate soon so I expect it’ll drop a little bit.

I don’t speed up and slow down to weave on the freeway like I may have done as a young man. If there’s traffic I accept it and cruise at the speed of traffic. But if there’s freeway is open I have no problem setting the cruise control to 75mph, or passing people on two lane hwys if I have the clearance. That being said I drive like an old man in the city. I haven’t kept track but I’ve done a good mix of both.

I’m generally happy with my hwy mpgs even when I go over 65mph and generally unhappy with city mpgs no matter how gentle I am. It is what it is I like my truck.

So far:
Currently in the midst of an experiment to see if higher octane fuel helps the roughness in the 35-47 mph range. Do not believe (and not trying to provoke) yet another conversation on what octane means or the labeling of octane grades.

Last four tanks have involved road trips of 4-9h duration in a single shot with speeds running at most +10mph over signage (when traffic allowed that is) and minimal extreme acceleration. 17mph tank was loaded bed and loaded utility trailer.

Stated EPA on my trim at time of purchase was 23-24-24

Today I topped off with 87 octane gas and did a 39.1-mile trip at a steady 70 MPH with cruise control on, and in Normal Mode, mostly on the Interstate. My average MPG was 20.9 which is the highest MPG I've gotten with this truck in the month I've owned it. My 2020 SR5 with a V-6 got better gas mileage.

They are windless, but they include the coefficient of drag of the vehicle in their MPG calculations.

They do two highway tests. Both start warm, so these estimates are wishful thinking for 90% of our drives since I start my commutes cold and you get worse mpg cold.

One, tops out at 60 mph but only averages 48.3 so really they aren't going that fast.

Now, they do a "high speed" test that sits at 80 mph...for 30 seconds. the average mph of that test is 48.4 mph. Does not reflect what most of us do on the highway at all.

As I thought: They don't perform a real-life test. I don't know anybody that would drive 48.3 mph on the hihghway where even modest speeds are 55. Consumer Reports does real-world tests, but I haven't looked at them lately.
