Here in Canada the ‘24 Tacomas did not come with the rear view mirror or automatic tailgate. I’m not sure about the ‘25s though.

Here's a shot of the mirror with the SmartCap. You lose about 20%. You need to adjust the settings in the mirror.

One of my latches quit working. I contacted Smartcap, and they said they had a bad batch. They are sending six of the old-style latches and will replace them with upgraded new-style latches when they become available.

keeping this is mind when I purchase a 4th Gen.

Current 3rd Gen w/ Leer 100 - it's fine, they have improved designs over the years, no leaks. Learned along time ago, go w/ simple T -handle and plastic window on back - the heavy "slick" looking heavy glass rears will cause problems over time shutting properly etc.

I have siding front window on shell (open 1" or 2") to create positive pressure - to keep toxic fumes and dust out. Absolute must - I'm a falconer. Toppers are big deal to me, to put it mildly.

I assume you looked lighter aluminum ones from the competition before buying the Steel Smartcap?

Predators steps are gone, and larger Falken Rubitreks put on since this pic. Brush guard is literally to brush guard driving in prairie, might help w/ a deer road smack, but likely not much.

The Smartcaps are lighter than fiberglass caps. If I recall, mine is 160 pounds. Powder coated stainless steel.

So, I didn't buy one because they're expensive. Perhaps that's on your menu, but not mine.

I put money down on an allocation in June, and as soon as I had the final VIN, I ordered a Leer. I picked up my truck in early August, and eight weeks later, I called the Leer dealer and asked them what was going on with my order.

"Leer says they don't have windoors for the new Taoma toppers yet."

I cancelled and got my money back. That same day–a Monday–I ordered a Smartcap. I picked it up two days later.

My old Leer leaked; perhaps it was the fault of the installer. I never could fix it.

Yeah, I paid $500 more for a higher quality cap. I like it a lot more than my old Leer. The side doors are much larger and it doesn't leak.

Thanks. I think you are misinterpreting my q's intent- I was not implying you bought it for status/price ("despite" - not because) - the opposite. I was asking it this way: we know they are pricey, and you stepped up anyway - just looking for your reasons why (for my own shopping)?
