About 6 hours after I drove my 24 Tacoma Sport, I noticed a noise like a small motor running as I walked by the tailgate. I got under with a creeper and determined that the noise came from a black box right above the passenger side of the spare tire. The noise continued for at least 5 minutes. As an experiment, I started the engine and shut it off. The noise stopped. I would like to know what component this is and if it is normal. With the thought that it might involve the fuel pump or gas tank, I checked the gas cap and found it tight.

Thanks!

Another post showed up in "Similar Posts" stating that it is normal and mentioned in the first 10 pages of the owners manual.

Yeah. It's normal. But it is a bit freaky when you're sleeping in the bed and it goes on and on and on and on. I recommend a battery booster just in case.

Funny, I noticed it many many months ago. Was wondering what that was. Like a little motor wirring.

I'd have to look more into it, but that sounds like a vacuum leak detection pump for the evap system.

Yep, EVAP system leakdown test. I freaked out the first time I heard mine do it.

The manual says something about it too. It happens 5hr after shutdown.

As long as it stops, you should be good! I remember hearing a strange electric motor noise on my Audi one day, the ECU fried itself and the fuel pump just kept running until I disconnected the battery.
