Tailgate doesn’t open consistently

My tailgate has never opened consistently. Always getting stuck. So I had the motor replaced once under warranty. Now it’s doing it again and I’m scheduled to get it replaced again. But then I power washed the bed and it is 90% improved. Is this just a dirt issue? And why didn’t the dealer tell me this? Is there a TSB on this ?

Seems like this a fairly widespread issue. I've seen a handful of posts here and a few on FB & TW.

There is a permanent fix though.
















Remove the tailgate motor - it's creating more problems than it's worth. Sometimes more technology isn't the answer.

Why do I think it’s not the motor? Warranty it and let Toyota pay for it while your time gets wasted.

Yeah. It’s not conclusive. I’m weighing whether to let Toyota fuck with it as they just replace the motor instead of actually problem solving.

I squirt the innards with silicone lubricant about every other month. Works like a champ.

After putting some lubricant recommended in another thread on the latch, works like a charm
