My tailgat won’t open anymore. It started to intermittently make groaning noises a couple months ago but was never consistent enough to take to the dealer. Now it just won’t open. Service appt tomorrow.

Mine does the same thing. I can't get it to do it at the dealership no matter what I do. I've recorded it but they want to see it first hand.

Let me know what you find out!

Dealer was able to replicate the problem. He yanked it open and we opened the first flap then tried it again. Same issue.

My tailgate locks up if it come into contact with my tonneau, so that could be a problem.

But the sound that @rijc99's truck makes when it almost open sounds like something is seriously wrong with it. I hope his dealer figures this out and fixes it.

Thanks for posting. Mine just began making a whine, so I'm keen to hear what the dealer found in your case and their resolution.

Had a problem with tailgate not lowering. Venice Fl. Toyota tried to tell me that I had to take off Retrax roll up tonneau to eliminate problem check first. It was rolled open at time so no interference. Up north went to Nucar Toyota Rhode Island. Diagnosed ECU as problem. Had it changed in two weeks but warning light on dash still intermittent error. Went back and they said sensors were too sensitive and needed to be replaced. If you grab tailgate the dash lights up warning. Any way waiting on new sensors for a couple of weeks. Tailgate operates just fine.
Cost of ECU was $490. So hope that never happens after warranty. Good luck all.

Funny you mentioned interference. They tried to pawn it off on my factory installed hard trifold needing adjustment too. But I reminded my service writer that we tested it with the first fold up together so that means interference shouldn’t be the problem. He’s now having the tech look further.

Tustin Toyota said they opened a case with Toyota which narrowed it to two possibilities. Wiring or Latch. I think this would solve my tailgate not opening issue.

Not sure how that explains the groaning issue so this is probably a separate problem.

But since they can’t narrow it down they’re not going to fix anything for now.

I’m upset because I didn’t make a stink about my 11 month old truck needing an oil pan gasket and rear main seal and they’re not willing to fix the one problem I took the truck in for.

Before I get flamed… I get I’m not entitled to anything but if ever there was a case that warranted some good will from Toyota I felt this would be it.

I don't think it is entitled to expect a truck to have a freaking operational tailgate. The incompetence and lack of competent service provided by some Toyota dealers is beyond belief.

Update and venting some: Tustin believes the groaning sound and tailgate not opening are two separate issues. Neither of which they are able to repair at this time because they can’t decide between wiring or latch and therefore they can’t justify the repair.

So per the service writer. I am to take the truck and everytime it doesn’t open or makes a groaning noise. I am to take the truck in, check it in AND wait for a tech to look at it. Videos are not good enough. Service writer seeing it is not good enough. They need a code to send repair ticket for reimbursement.

This along with the oil leak issues and the TPMS display never sticking makes me really hate this truck. Of all the cars I’ve ever bought and owned, this truck is by far the worst. And that includes a pandemic built Model Y performance, BMWs and Mercedes. I don’t know what happened to Toyota but in the past when people who aren’t car enthusiasts asked me what car to get I always said Toyota. I can’t do that anymore.

The experience you have had might cause me to feel the same way. Sorry to read all that.

Have you reported the oil leak?
