I use small containers that spices, bullion cubes etc and put double sided velcro on the bottom to attach in machines and tractors. Drill a few small 5/8" holes in it and put the green blocks of rat poison in them. At least if they are making a nest in the machine they go to the easy food source and it kills them knock on wood but no issues so far.
Sounds good until they die inside your vehicle. And you can't find them.

Has anyone done the rodent screen protection that Toyota offers? I took my truck in to have some of the recalls done and they said they saw evidence of rodents, nothing crazy, just some foot prints. They asked if me if wanted their rat protection mesh to stop them from getting into the cabin and other areas where they could potentially get in and start chewing wires. It’s $562 dollars. I’m wondering if anyone has had this service from the dealers and if it’s worth it. It just feels like another one of their add-ons that they try to push on me every time I go in.
Took my '24 in for the complimentary inspection & the first thing the staff member does is pop the hood to check for rodent damage. Told him rats don't last long in our hood thanks to hawks & coyotes but snakes love to get in there. Freaked his ass out.

There is a large black racer snake that lives near our house. Harmless to people but there is not a rodent to be found in the area. The snake does freak out my wife when he is sunning in the open though, LOL.

Ideas like this come from the various associations and publications that only exist to tell indie shops and dealerships how to "increase revenue" and "build more foot traffic." Back when I was a service writer, I'd thumb through some of the magazines we had lying around—it was pretty eye-opening.

And then there's tires. You'd think a manufacturer makes the tires, sends them to a distributor, and then you sell them to a customer. Not even close.

I haven't heard of this, but I had rodents chew the wiring harness under the hood of my 2020 Taco. Toyota and other manufacturers' wire insulation is soy based which makes it tasty to the varmits. Toyota wouldn't replace it under warranty and my insurance didn't cover the $2500 it cost to replace the harness. Brush your wires with pepermint or capsicum pepper sauce and the rodents will leave the wiring alone. I think Honda or VW makes a tape you can wrap your harness and wires in.

I talked to a friend last night who lives near a creek in Napa Valley - during heavy rainy season, rats moved into his highlander an chewed the hell out his wiring harness. . . repair bill was $14,500 . . . his wife had talked him into getting full comprehensive insurance since it was their first new car and he only paid $100 deductible . . . so maybe it's something to consider if they offer a guarantee that replaces your harness should it not keep the rats out ...
