So the other night I wake up to my trunk honking in the driveway, only to look out the window and see the thief (young kid, teens) crawling out of the driver window and bolting down the street. Cops say he seemed to be a amateur. Broke the driver door window for access and left his screw driver on the seat. They also think he didn't get away with the truck because it was manual. Kids don't know how to drive stick these days I guess?

I'm really bummed about the whole thing. I'm worried I'll just get the truck back from Toyota once it has the damages repaired only to have them come back in a month or 2 and try stealing it again.

What can I do? I've got GPS tracking. I guess I'll start stacking deterrent on deterrent. Kill Switch? Steering lock? anything else?

Are all 4th gen Tacoma's push start? Even if they could drive stick how would they start the truck unless some sort of relay attack

Dang that's awful. Seems strange to attempt on a brand new vehicle that can be tracked easily with Toyota Safety Connect...

The market for parting brand new Tacomas can't be very profitable either so that makes zero sense as incentive.

Flashing LED as in something that would blind the thief in the cabin?
Any decent alarm will come with at least one LED. You need to talk to the shops around you? Even Best buy. See who knows what their talking about, An alarm Compatible with a manual trans. Has ignition kill or starter interrupt or both. If installed right and brain buried they cant steal the truck!
Not that big a deal, just not as common as a setup for a Auto trans. Depends how much you want to spend. Remote start, doors. Shock sensor, etc. Cheap alarm probably starts around a hundred plus install probably. Hopefully you can find a place that is good at what they do and not ripoff. Compustar, Viper been around a long time.

I'm wondering the same.
They just need to access the CAN system, and then with a cheap tool, they emulate a key and drive away. Saw a video where they pull back the trim next to the headlight on a rav4, plug into the harness, open the door and drive away.

The kill switch idea isn’t well thought out, especially w/a hybrid, there’s security systems & other dash cam electronics etc running in the background. You kill that it presents other problems altogether.

Also vehicle theft can happen anywhere, near home, at home or while traveling. The idiots spewing this bullshit to move haven’t had this experience happen to them yet but trust, America can be a shit hole at any given time & place / their number just hasn’t come up yet…

also garaging as a suggestion: no shit, we’d all love to garage our rigs. Some are too tall, some of us don’t have a garage. That’s a fking no brainer.

I actually had a smash & grab happen to me while at church. Parked away from other vehicles to avoid door dings. That was a mistake. Also leave nothing in the rig. A Rivian R1T was also broken into that same day/time they took a $10 diaper bag and they smashed the infotainment console along with several chips in the front acoustic glass couldn’t break that window but managed to get in through the rear windows. That dude’s Rivian was probably $15k damage. For a diaper bag.

What you can do: steering wheel lock, OB2 lock, wheel locks, spare tire lock, redundancy locks for anything in the bed under a tonneau, security motion lights outside, security camera if you can swing it. Obviously leave nothing in the vehicle. You’ll be paranoid making sure things are locked every night, you won’t need reminding of that.

you can also disconnect the tail gate switch on the driver console: thieves can break the glass, hit the tailgate button, lower you tailgate and literally disconnect it and walk off with it without triggering the alarm. IDK what a tailgate goes for at a fencing operation but it’s super expensive to get one at a dealership SMH

and the CAN bus attacks are pro level scanner type shit, but like I said, OBD2 lock, steering wheel to seat belt lock, slow these fkers down or make them rethink it entirely. A kill switch makes sense on an old rig like my dodge, I have one, and those are the vehicles most thieves are after — easier to steal, they drive then into business fronts, load up atms and drive off, abandon the vehicle within hours

EDIT: also get a faraday bag for the key fog you have laying out for daily use. Always put the fob in the faraday bag. Or tin can etc. put your extra fobs in a metal safe.
