Criminy. I'll have to buy one this spring. Thanks.
Keep an eye on pricing. Normal price is $500 but they routinely put it on sale for ~$300-350. I believe everyone has the same pricing, and the same sales, so Home Depot is a convenient place to pick one up when they're on sale. Also, ping me or one of the other guys when you're thinking of buying it and I can get you a code that will get you a free month of service.

Yeah the $5/month for 500kbps/unlimited data is very adequate for my communication needs in the bush. Can stream spotify, make voice calls, do mapping, and search google without problem. This covers what i need when I'm out of service most of the time.

Doomscrolling and watching video doesn't work that well, but if i need that stuff you can just drop $50 to cover that for the month on demand and switch back at any time.

My biggest gripe is that the truck doesn't allow for a Wi-Fi connection, and your phone can't be connected to both Starlink and the truck at the same time.
I have an AI box, which is a workaround to this, but it would be nice if my phone and carplay would work while on starlink.
Big gripe of mine as well! Currently I’m using wired carplay when connected to starlink wifi since wireless carplay gets bumped by the wireless connection.

This is kind of annoying though and you have to use the plug at the top right of the screen since other usb ports are charge only.

What’s the AI box? Any other thoughts about how to overcome this limitation? I tried splitting the 2.4/5ghz bands on the starlink hoping the phone could use one for wifi and one for carplay but no dice.

+1 can more of the permanently mounted setups post pics of the wiring plz and thanks
I don't have pics but the easiest way I found to route cables into the truck for this type of purpose is through the subwoofer enclosure. If you take the four nuts holding the subwoofer off you'll find that the subwoofer is externally vented through a baffle. Cut a couple of pieces of the plastic mesh on the baffle and drill a hole in the side of the subwoofer cabinet and cables will route through into the truck without any other cutting. The entry point has a flap that prevents water and whatnot getting in and I've noticed no difference in the sound quality of the speaker.

I have this one but it appears they have a newer model

Overall it works well, and opens up some nice features, like using the full screen for videos and more flexibilty in apps vs what carplay allows for.

Nice so if i understand correctly you plug this box into the wired carplay port on the screen and then connect the box directly to starlink wifi, is that right? Then your phone isnt even involved in carplay setup at all?

Question for the SL Mini crew: if I order this mini kit, how solid is it to mount on a roof rack? I see these drawings how they mount it to an RV with the OE back center mount…is that all aluminum & robust or do I need to order some satgear frames, etc to mount this in my 10 series aluminum extrusion roof rack? Any other accessories you guys recommend?

2024 Tacoma Post your Starlink mini mounting setup! IMG_1243

My sense is the Starlink network will only improve & the Weboost stuff is more or less old news?

Gracias

There is no way I'd trust the mounting brackets that come with the SL Mini kit. IMHO they're only suitable for stationary mounting. Buy a good bracket that encloses the mini and gives you multiple mounting points to securely fasten it. You might be able to use the Striker Fab kit mentioned earlier in the thread, or I bought this and it was perfect for my application. YMMV.

Oh, and the Starlink and a cell booster are really two different products entirely. I have the HiBoost, which is pretty much the same as the Weboost and I never use it but it does have it's use case scenarios. It's good if you're just trying to make a call and barely have a signal, but keep in mind you do have to have a signal for it to be usable at all. No signal, nothing to boost... It's not going to do much to help internet connectivity on your phone. After having one for a while, I think they're mainly good for those who drive a lot and just need to extend cell coverage a bit. You see them on practically every work vehicle in Eastern Oregon for a reason...

If I had it to do over again I wouldn't spend the money on a cell booster for my use case.
