That picture is worth a thousand thread comments. Can’t ever see myself adhering to the recommended 10K change interval.
And throw turbo on top of it!
10,000 m is "Emperor has no clothes" nonsense that seems prevalent in the world today - just go along w/ obvious nonsense. Strange as how bad they made the factory tune on 3rd gen. If you actually do deep dive, you never find the straight answer why - emissions by no means is the full answer. Bizarre.
When I got my new 3rd gen (had 1.5 Gen years earlier) and saw first recommend oil change 10,000 miles and was totally "WTF!?"

When I got my new 3rd gen (had 1.5 Gen years earlier) and saw first recommend oil change 10,000 miles and was totally "WTF!?"
My totally unscientific and unproven take on the whole 10K mi interval is an average Toyota will go 150K mi on that change interval no problem. However, we here want 300,000 mi minimum on our engines and my unscientific opinion is that's much more likely with 4-5K changes.

10K mi changes are a definite problem especially with turbos if you run hard off-road a lot or often haul a 6,500 lb trailer around up mountains with the turbo screaming at max psi for extended times AND THEN immediately shut the engine off without letting the turbo cool down a little bit. The oil in it will cook. But, as I said before if someone wants to stick to the "10K miles is what the Toyota engineers say so that's what I'm sticking to" then it's a free country. I'm sure they'll be back on here at some point bitching about Toyota quality when your turbo or engine craps out at 100K miles.

Individual Toyota dealers might be on to something; when I got one of my free oil changes last winter, the reminder sticker was for 5k miles. I also think that most Toyota consumers that intend to keep their vehicles >100k probably do more frequent oil changes as well. In addition, I think almost all passenger car and light truck engines are happier with a full synthetic 5w30 rather than 0w20. Used oil analysis on two newer Hondas showed this to be true. I haven't yet run anything other than 0w20 in my Tacoma yet though.

Two things - I too get 5k mi stickers but those are for tire rotations, general inspection. At my dealer at least they only change the oil free at 10K and 20K. Second, I’d be cautious on the viscosity change. I’m not suggesting to not do it, but would encourage somebody interested in doing it to *really* dig into how these engines use and manage oil. It’s more than just the turbo, etc. In these engines the oil does a lot more than just lubricate and I think some people overlook that. I feel good with 0W20 and 3-5k mile oil changes. YMMV
