I never owned a car with an auto. Manual all the way. I wouldn’t worry about your age I am 68 bought my first truck/ Tacoma/6mt and love it. Ist to 2nd is a bit funky but you will figure it out. Go for it you won’t be disappointed.

4G autobox is super reliable (yes there were initial problems) and trans fluid change is not a big deal. Do it every 30,000 miles and will last longer than enough.

Forgive me if this was covered in the thread, but do manuals have automatic braking like the automatics? If so, if the Toyota safety sense slams on the brakes does it kill the engine?

It will auto brake as part of cruise control, unsure about emergency situations, I've gotten the alarm but no braking as part of that. I am yet to stall this truck, and haven't intentionally tried to see what happens.

Noted some reference to M/T and owners age - I just turned 80 and love my SR M/T - but then again no knee or leg issues - yet:)

I would like to know if the manual transmission buyers have any regrets going this route.
My motivation was to keep it simple. I was hoping this was a better option for longevity.
I wanted to avoid torque converter issues, trans fluid changes, and possible overheating.
All my life I had vehicle with a manual transmission. I'm just not sure I made the right choice at my age (Mid 50's).
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you
I'm 70 And I found it took a bit of time to get it smooth. And I have always had manual transmissions. I think part of it is the flywheel is lighter than it should be to conserve fuel economy.
The heaver flywheel keeps the momentum and inertia going which makes it a smother shift.

Since I asked the questions and brought up age, I now know I have nothing to regret since we have some experienced gentleman between 68-70 buying and driving daily. God Bless you all!
Over the weekend I mention to my 90 yrs old Uncle who still drives everyday his 2003 Tundra with a manual trans that I might have regrets. His said Well don't be a pussy and just enjoy the truck. So enough said! I now have what maybe my forever truck going forward. Thanks for all the input from both sides on this topic.

I bought this truck because it was offered in a manual, not because I had to have a Tacoma and they happened to also offer a manual. The transmission sometimes clunks when changing gears, the shift lever is too long, the shift throw is too long, redline is too low, the gear ratios aren't perfect for city driving, and reverse is in a bad shift pattern location with no lockout. But I would definitely buy it again. The rev hang isn't nearly as bad as my last manual (100% fixed with a tune) and after getting the OTT tune last weekend it's even less. It is not in the running for best manual I've owned, but it is still a satisfying manual to drive.

It happened once to me, the truck stalled because I didn’t know wtf was happening. Simply engaging the clutch would have prevented this. I was accelerating from a rolling stop and had no time to react but normally instinct would kick in and you put I it neutral whenever anything seems off.

Love the manual, only "regret" is when dealing with another driver. I need to teach my S/O and friends how to drive manual, just not with my car hah!
