Another new SR5 Owner! Recommendations/Advice Please!

Hello All! This is my first Tacoma. I’m coming from a top of the line Gladiator and wife has a 2025 Sequoia Platinum so I will need some help for upgrades to make this truck look and feel dope!

Things i’m looking to do so far:

1- New Tires and Wheels. Kind of bummed I didn’t go for the next trim up. I didn’t realize the trd had a bit of a lift compared the SR5. I thought it was only the TRD Pro and Trailhunter that had some lift. I read many warnings on reddit against lifting the truck and it’s also thousands of dollars so I probably won’t lift it for now. I’d like recommendations for best wheels and tires that will give the truck a more off road look and will also give it a bit more height off the ground without a full lift. Also don’t want my MPG to take a big dive so I think I have to watch the weight of the wheels and tire combo?

2- Tonneau Cover- was looking at this one on amazon: https://a.co/d/05cfq89T . Don’t want to spend $1,500 on a cover and I prefer a hard one.

3- The TRD Pro grill is a must for me. I was looking at the kit on rave off road with light bar options. These light bars come in different shapes sizes and most importantly, prices! Lol Anyone have any experience replacing the grill, anyone used rave off road kit?

4- Seat covers- haven’t looked into it too much but i’ve had leather/leatherette seats for the past 10 years so i’d like to get that feel in this truck.

5- Roof Light bar and rack- damn this is pricey!

6- Need wiring help. I will likely add/change lighting all around the truck, fogs, fangs, raptor, etc. I saw some videos explaining how to wire to aux switches on the dash. Unfortunately, SR5’s, at least mine, does not have any aux switches on the dash. It just has a bunch of blank unused buttons. Any pointers here would help as I could not find any videos on how to turn those blank switches into light switches.

7- Any other recs for must haves please feel free to share. I’m treating this like an adult Lego set and can’t wait to tinker with mods for the next few years! Thanks in advance!

Welcome !

1. The lift on the TRD OR is only from the tires. No suspension height differences. In fact, all of the TRD shocks are on recall for falling apart, so don't feel like you missed out!
Cheap option to start is just some TRD take offs which you can find on Facebook for a couple hundred bucks. I just got a full set for $250.

2. Lots of good options, keep hearing good things about diamondback switchback 2.0

3. Get the pro grille on sale from somewhere like Apex Toyota or Serra Toyota through their online parts store. During the next 25% off sale you can get it delivered to your door for $227. Would definitely go OEM and not cheap aftermarket with lame ass raptor lights (just personal preference though).

4. Ekr and coverdream are amazing seat covers. Use the search bar here to find reviews.

5/6 cant help ya here too much but used a cali raised switch for my light bar. Pretty straight forward process and lots of tutorials on YouTube.

7. Skid plate! Same deal, wait until the next 25% off sale and order with your grille. TRD for right around $250. Trailhunter or landcruiser with the Toyota stamp for right around $200

Thanks for the detailed reply bro! I didn’t even think of looking for takeoffs! When you say $250, do you mean wheels and tires? I can’t seem to find anything under $1,000 in my area with tires and $600 is the lowest I see for just wheels.

Yea and a member here actually sent me the link. Wheels and tires. No tpms or lugs. You just have to be patient, but in my area there are a set of 17" TRD wheels (no tires) for $120 right now. Check marketplace, the marketplace here on the forum (usually overpriced) and offer up. And then sell your stock wheel set for a few hundred and get some 285/70/17 tires. You'll be stoked and it will sit higher than ORs off the lot.

I have an SR5. 1ish inch lift with Bilstein 5100s and 275/70r18 (camper photo). Makes my co workers stock OR look wimpy when I park next to it lol but even before the bilsteins on stock suspension 285/70r17 or 275/70r18 looks good (photo with the bronze wheels).

If you want trailhunter or pro wheels with a more aggressive offset they can be had with center caps for $800 during a big sale

It looks a bit higher with in the 1st pic, is it tires or did you lift?

First pic is 1" in the front and 1.5" in the rear, sits at 1" in the front 1" in the rear now.

Second pic was stock Hitachi suspension with 275/70r18

Crazy how 1” makes a difference. Which kit did you put in?

Bilstein 5100s on the first setting up front and peak suspension 1" spacer in the rear, but I would just do the cornfed rear spacer. Cheaper and does the same thing. Love the 5100s though!

Id sell you my takeoffs if you were closer if thats what you want. However, if you're long term goal is a larger tire than oem Id recommend avoiding new takeoffs.

Aftermarket wheels offer better backspacing, and the most important factor people overlook, weight. To retain close to oem mpg, weight is the most important factor. Going to manufacturers websites and looking at wheel weight is the best way to find wheels. I prefer simpletire for researching tire weight as they tend to have the most accurate data. If you don't offroad the lightest wheel/tire combo is best. If you need the increased tire strength you can still minimize the impact on mpgs.
