Picked up my ‘25 sport yesterday, and honestly, coming from my ‘06 - this thing’s a spaceship!

I have a question about the motor, or more exactly, “knocking” or “farting” sound coming from the engine on harder acceleration. My only “performance” engine was the 1GR in my ‘06, otherwise it’s been little 4-bangers. Never had a turbo before.

Like I said, it’s only under harder acceleration, like you do when it’s new, and when I let off, it quiets right down, if not goes away. If it is knock, would a bottle of octane booster help, until I burn through the dealer-supplied tank?

I apologize for the simplistic question, but never had a turbo before.

These engines are a bit noisy. They quiet down after a while. I noticed a difference after a few tanks of premium fuel. It’s proven via dyno that the engine is happier on higher octane gas, but 87 is obviously fine. I’ll pay more for a smoother engine and a cheap HP boost

Wow! I didn’t remember that noise from the demo truck, but it may have been there. I’m probably being sensitive because it’s the first new truck in 19 years for me. Thanks, I’ll make sure the next and following tanks are 91+.

these new Tacomas are just a little better than the past gen
Good grief. The power train is heads above the 3rd gen. No more gear hunting and the torque nearly reaches that of the naturally aspirated V8 Tundra engine. It pulls my camper much better than my 2016 Taco. I've driven trucks since 1985, and the suspension is fantastic. I've never seen a truck that can take washboard like this does.

The list goes on.

Did you turn off artificial engine noise?

bad gas should not be a problem…

If you want a spaceship get a Cybertruck, these new Tacomas are just a little better than the past gen.
Sorry, I had to use the laugh icon on that one from this hands on and close experience. The gen 4 Tacoma is a leaps and bounds improvement over my two prior generation Toyotas experience. Associates who got the Cybertruck and Bronco have had all of the SFQ problems known and discussed about those models while the high volume Tacoma has had few. That my Tacoma is primarily a work and task vehicle for my business, trail building and pursuit of back country stuff in personal time makes the Tacoma look even better because my associates' Teslas and Fords don't get that sort of use yet have had more problems and recalls.

@The Dude I think you just describe nature of the machine. I heard those upper injectors all the way back to test rides. I qualify what some say about high octane as a point of caution because it does not do anything to change how my pickup sounds. Same for my cousin who has Land Cruiser version of the powertrain. You for sure notice the performance more at high altitude and freeway speed high payload or towing but your boost in fuel milage is not cost effective.

I do suggest these follow the top tier gasoline spec. While it was all under warranty, my wife's car had an injector replacement and she was getting gasoline at two of the cheapest places in our area that do not have that spec. On modern vehicles you don't want that disassembly and put to gather even if a warranty claim if only for our experience of the dealer staff messing up!

Good luck with your new rig.

Thanks guys, good discussion.

@james cole Yup, spaceship. From an ‘06 SR5, where the most tech thing was power windows, the tech in the sport prem. - miles ahead.

@CrispyTacoLover No, I haven’t turned off “fake engine noise”. I need Carista for that, correct?

@Sagebrush @bitflogger Exactly! It’s a 20 year difference for me between vehicles! Just a couple things changed.:crazy:

@MT-Taco I got the prem., so it came with the hood insulation. If it’s just injectors and the turbo, I’ll happily live with them.

Thanks all. Keep suggestions coming.

The knocking went away in my motor after a couple tanks of 87 octane recommended in the book. As far as mpg performance, the best mpg's came from 85 octane in UT and AZ with about 7600 miles on the odometer.

I've never seen 85 Octane at the pumps in Canada. that said I think the min recommended is 87, I throw some 91 in during long trips and this engine loves it.
How many miles or kms do you have on your truck?

58kms, it’s a baby. I’ve never seen anything below 87 here in Western Canada either. I plan on running 91 Shell top tier gas, but wanted to know if there was a problem. Sounds like it’s just injector noise, which I’ll get used to. The 1GR in the ‘06 had lifter tick, and I had to think about it to hear it after a while.

Yes. There are likely other settings you’ll want to change, too.
