Glad you had a good experience. I have a Curt and want my old Tekonsha
Prodigy P3 back ?
I have that one too believe it or not. When I found out there was no plug in my Tacoma for it I was really really upset. But the wireless one is very similar.
Pig tailing and extensive wiring are beyond my capabilities. Why there is no plug in 4th gen is baffling to me. I’m just a plug and play kinda person. Those schematics make my eyes cross. Easier for me to just go wireless

I agree, it makes no sense, especially when the 4Runner has the wiring, but is rated to tow less. Any competent trailer shop should be able to install a controller, but sounds like your Bluetooth unit is working well for you.

Yeah, I decided that too. Wireless I just easier but I still think what Toyota is doing is just wrong. And, now I bought the Curt and hate it and don’t think I can return it and get a Tekonsha wireless. Maybe when I save up more money. I hate this Bluetooth stuff. Always a slight delay in braking and I’ve had trailer brakes lock up at low speed. This Curt thing is garbage for how much it costs.

I really appreciate all of the knowledge shared on this thread. I currently have a 2018 TRD OR with a P3 brake controller wired through the factory plug. I am looking at updating to a 2025 TRD. There are enough differences between the 3rdGen and 4thGen that I am carefully doing as much research as I can, and this forum is priceless. It's not that I don't trust the dealer to tell the truth, the salesrep is a personal friend, it's that I know he doesn't have all of the technical answers and, as other have shown, the resources for the dealer to get the answers is lacking. I know now that I'll either get the Sport/OR Upgrade package ($4800) or plan on the Prodigy wireless controller. It will cost me more than the cost of the new wireless controller to get someone to wire in my old P3 (I'm lazy now). Anyway, thank you all.

Yes, thank you. I'd get the heated seats regardless, so it's really only a $4000 package to me. Still, $4000 for the brake controller and heated steering wheel (I'm indifferent about the other additions), is a tough decision I'm yet to make. Okay, $400 for the Prodigy, so now it's only $3600. We'll see.

unless you're a Toyota sales rep trying to up-sell me :)
I'm not, but when I started looking for my Taco, I'm glad the salesman I was dealing with found an OR with the Premium package.

It was certainly more than I was looking for, but I'm glad I went with it.

Same with my current truck. Too late in the year to order custom, and my must haves (color, heated seats, and manual trx) left only a few choices. As it was, I had to go 350 miles to get it. No tears, it's a great truck. I expect to find a similar situation again, so I may indeed end up with the Premium.

PROBABLE SOLUTION:

On 7/26/2025, I sent a complaint to the Toyota Engagement Center as I believe that the consumers and the dealerships are suffering due to Toyota's "breach of implied qualifications that their vehicles with "towing packages" were sufficiently equipped and available able to adequately tow a load equivalent to the vehicle specifications of 6,500 pounds. And that the installation instructions and/or schematic diagrams were allegedly not provided to the dealerships."

I purchased that SR5 with the explicit need to tow a 3,000 pound camper trailer. The Toyota specs were that the truck could tow that. But, I need a trailer brake controller to comply state law and to be safe. Ohio state law requires a trailer brake controller over 2,000 pounds.

Since I bought the Tacoma in June 2024, I've been trying to get an OEM trailer brake controller installed by a Toyota dealer. As a result, I have not been able to pull a travel trailer for two (2) seasons.

Toyota provided me with the part number, which is available; however, the dealer service manager told me that Toyota could not provide schematics or instructions of installation.
The service manager referred me to a aftermarket installer. However, Toyota does not recommend third party parts and I questioned if the OEM part, installed by an aftermarket installer, would compromise my warranty.

I queried two other Toyota dealerships during the last month and never received a reply.

The Toyota Engagement Center replied:

"Thank you for your patience as we researched your inquiry about the brake controller you were seeking for your 2024 Tacoma. We apologize for any frustration or inconvenience you’re experiencing due to these unanticipated issues.

We contacted the (dealership) team on your behalf and spoke with ____, the operations manager, who researched the part number you provided in your inquiry (84391-AK010) and she has ordered the part for you and said they will follow up with you on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025 to schedule a time/date to install the part.

Toyota's warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any part supplied by Toyota. Modifications to your vehicle could affect the performance, safety or durability, and may violate government regulations. Non-Toyota parts, or any damage or failures resulting from their use, are not covered by any Toyota warranty."

I hope this helps fellow Gen 4 Tacoma, SR5, owners, who had faith in Toyota and who are frustrated by the inability to get an OEM brake controller.

SR5, did you follow up with your dealer and get it installed? My dealer ordered that part a month after I got the truck. I took the truck in thinking it would get installed and solve the problem. They have a special Tech who deals with accessories installation. He Took the front dash apart. Spent over two hours pondering the problem. Put everything back together and handed me the Curt ad. The part was not much more than the switch assembly you see in a truck configured with a brake controller. The wiring he needed and software to recognize the switch was not part of the package.
