I know there are plenty of YouTube videoed on this, but here’s what to expect for the install of the ECGS diff carrier bushing on my 2024 SR5. If you aren’t familiar, all the 4wd Tacomas from second gen (something like that.. feel free to correct me) onward use an idler needle bearing to support the CV on the drivers side. When the truck isn’t in 4wd, the cv turns against this needle bearing and when the front is raised at all, to where the CVs are at any downward pitch, you will feel a vibration at street and highway speeds through the steering wheel due to the side loading on the not so tight tolerance between the shaft and bearing. Here’s the step by step of it.

Separate tie rod end.

IMG_1155.webp

Remove lower mounting bolts holding lower ball joint assembly to spindle.

IMG_1157.webp

Remove dust cap from hub.

IMG_1158.webp

Remove CV nut using 35mm socket, then separate CV from spindle

.
IMG_1159.webp

Prop or tie the spindle out of the way and be mindful of the brake lines/speed sensors wire.

IMG_1160.webp

Pry the cv out, be careful of the dust shields but these can be straightened if bent.

IMG_1161.webp

Despite the loud vibration, the shaft surface against the needle bearing is in great shape.

IMG_1190.webp

Insert paper towel or plastic bag into splines to prevent extracting tool from falling into diff.

IMG_1189.webp

Set slotted nut from extractor tool in behind needle bearing(I had to slightly bevel the edge to get it in easily.

IMG_1187.webp

After popping the oil seal out, thread in the all-thread and plate making sure the slotted nut is seated only against the needle bearing and pull it out. You will run out of length and need to put supportive backing between the plate and the diff to get it all the way out.

IMG_1168.webp

No damage found on my needle bearing thankfully despite the intensity of the vibration.

IMG_1182.webp

Using the driver, take your time lining up the bushing and pound it in. The driver will bottom out when it is flush.

IMG_1192.webp

The bushing should look like this when correctly seated.

IMG_1183.webp

Install new oil seal.

IMG_1184.webp

Line up splines and pound shaft back in until it’s all the way in!

IMG_1185.webp

Putting everything back together is just a reverse of the Teardown, but I like to add anti seize when appropriate. Be sure to either top off or replace the diff fluid before putting the wheel back on.

With the installation complete, the vibration has completely disappeared. I consider this supporting mod to be non negotiable with any height adjustments to the front of the truck no matter how slight.

Thank you for explaining what you accomplished and why, something to look into. If you don't mind, how much did it cost in part? And did you have to get an alignment after you installed them.
No alignment necessary as long as you don’t loosen the lower control arm bolts, I wanna say it was just under $200 for the bushing, driver, seal and extractor tool.

? What what what, an improvement on our trucks for 2 c notes unheard of lol
Why the hell didn't toyota do it in the first place, oh, I know because they want them to break and for us, to have them fix it.

I think it was more like $170, nevertheless, this is only necessary when the front is lifted at all. What id like to know is how the factory lifted trucks are faring or if anything about the needle bearing is done on these trucks. Mine is lifted less than the factory trucks and still was loud immediately. Altogether, I think its nice that the bushing is a case closed fix and doesn’t open up a list of new variables in need of correction.

I have Yakima 60” wings and mounts on the cab and ordered the leer topper with the Thule crossbar option. I requested 60” but they gave me 48” and I was too lazy to do anything about it in time.

Thanks! We u-bolted some 2x2's on my buddies 3rd gen Tacoma to carry 2 canoes last summer, I was never confident doing that with my Jeep due to the mounting on the drip rail setup. Our canoes are 34 inches wide each, should be good to get both on 60 inches with a staggered position.
