My late mother’s old Subaru has been sitting in my driveway for six months, brand new battery but I forgot to disconnect it from the car so it fully drained. Too dead for my little jump box, it’ll need a jump from a running car. Can the positive terminal in the hybrid fuse box be jumped from? Anybody use it on a very drained battery without any computer issues?

No. It's for jumping as the receiving car only. If you need to jump, use the battery under the rear seat, if you absolutely have to.

If the battery in the subaru is completely dead you probably want to run down to your local Walmart (or parts store) and pick up a cheap battery charger. Don't need (or want) a lot of amperage.
You'll probably be buying a new battery, but you might get lucky.

These are the worst type of questions to ask in forums honestly because you’ll get nothing but baseless opinions from idiots, or suggestions that weren’t asked for like “just buy another battery” or “just buy a dedicated charger” instead of answering the question. Like yes, in a perfect world we would all be in a position to buy another battery or charge it but that’s not always possible.

I’m inclined to say yes, it’s probably fine to jump start a small car but I’m pretty sure Toyota says those terminals are for jump starting your truck, not for jump starting other vehicles.

I tapped into this positive terminal to power my D-switch which powers about 60A worth of lights and I haven’t experienced any issues yet. I know this isn’t any where near the same amps a car battery will pull when being jumped but it’s a positive sign I think.

If you absolutely had to jump start another car with your Tacoma I would probably hook up the jumper cables and just let the Tacoma run for as long as possible without starting the other car to ‘trickle charge’ it. If the other car didn’t start on the first or second crank I wouldn’t try to push it.

That’s just my opinion though I don’t know anything about electricity besides how to crimp some cables so don’t take my word for it.

Yeah that’s what I’m getting from the responses, I was hoping somebody had used theirs as a jump point for another car and had some OE to share (both for this and if someone needs to jump another car from a Taco hybrid in an emergency in the future). I ended up ordering a $30 charger off Amazon rather than risking a $60k truck for a $2k beater.

MPGs will improve if you trickle charge that starter cell. I have a ‘24 TH that sat in port w/intake redesign/ long story short - my starter battery went bad and I decided to keep this new cell always topped off w/a solar charge controller on top of my GFC and MPGs are legit better than sticker. = less time idling FWIW

That’s interesting, what kind of MPGs were you getting before and after?

I focus on trip MPGs currently/ with a bunk cell it’s ~15-18 MPGs for a relatively flattish 8mi round trip, with a properly charged healthy cell same trip is 24-27mpgs. City in town roads

Strange that you mention this- I also noticed a slight increase in mileage, but not nearly as drastic. I'm normally in the 15.2 range per tank over the last 35k miles, and have seen an improvement up to 15.5-15.8. It's only been about 3k miles with the charger, we'll see if that continues to be the case.

Whoa that’s crazy. I don’t understand what could be going on with this. I could understand the truck having to work a bit harder for a little bit after starting to recharge the battery, but once it’s charged up I would assume it wouldn’t have to work any harder.

I mean I guess the truck charger could help maintain the battery a little bit if its idling a lot but I doubt a small solar charger trickle charger would provide any meaningful charging.

I had a 200AH 2nd battery setup powered by a CTEC DC-DC charger on a 2nd gen taco and that thing would charge up that battery in a couple minutes. I can’t imagine the Toyota DC-DC charger is weaker or less efficient and is constantly charging the battery.

Do you notice a decline in MPGs on cloudy days?
