Take a look at a couple youtubes - the car care nut and the motor oil geek. While there's been a lot of discussion on this forum, when it's one of your first visits, the question is reasonable, even though a search would have garnered more than a few responses. Good luck, but change it now and at least every 5K after. Good luck.

Did the same as most here, 1K, 5K, and 10K. There's a Tacoma enthusiast on YouTube (along with probably several others) I watched who had Blackstone analyze every oil sample at every change and even their own recommendation is that the oil life with a turbo, moderate to severe conditions, and our oil capacity/type/weight that 5K changes were preferred, 10K is pushing it. I think their interpolated numbers was going about 7-8K intervals with his driving conditions would have resulted in poor viscosity and oil breakdown critically levels. It also showed the break-in and loss of particulate elements from the factory starting to trend to normal wear levels.

I did them at 1k, 5k and then 9k, 12k and 15k. I didn't mean to shorten my interval to 3k but I didn't want to miss the 10k due to a road trip, but I also didn't want to go over 5k OCI to get to 15k.

After 3k miles the engine sounds more tippy-tappy for sure. I'm considering doing a change at 17.5k and again at 20k mostly because we end up doing dusty offroading once almost every OCI. 2.5k OCI is easier to align with the factory schedule than 3k. Sometimes 5k feels a bit long?

Oil changes are cheap and I need the truck to last 200,000mi :cwl:

The dealership thought I was crazy getting an oil change at 1000 miles but I told them "Ok thanks, just put the oil in the truck"

what would you guys do if you don't put 5k miles on in 6 months? two changes a year still?

I changed at 1,000 miles after 6-months ownership. then at 4,000 miles on the truck's first birthday. I've yet to hit 5,000 miles in the truck and about to hit 1.5 years ownership. wondering if I should just do every 6 months, even though that will be like an interval of between 1-2k miles.

I'm of the opinion you or a professional etc should be under your vehicle looking at shit every 6mo anyways just because that's a good interval for inspection. Oil change is like $80 truck was like $40k just do it :like:

Do what everyone else say, 5K. Oil is cheap. Quite honestly, I'm ratcheting mine down from 5 to 3K.

If you're not piling on a lot of miles as you state, then you'll want to change at least once a year, otherwise every 5K. That said, do twice a year if it suits you. Certainly no harm in that. But once a year, minimum is the key.

Despite what you think oil contains contaminates from the processes of combustion, so leaving those residual compounds in your truck for long periods of time is actually harmful.

Ya but I saw a video that we should do everytime at the 3000 mark. Also do we do a break in, some say no some yes? Does it matter if I live in a warm or cold state, does that make it less or more frequent? How often do I post this question boys? Straighten me out!
Engine is already broken in by the time you get it. Well the rings anyhow. The rest of the components will break in over the next 15K miles. Keep in mind these things, as most (all?) vehicles these days come with synthetic oil in them from the factory. So the break in process is going to drag on a bit longer. But certainly nothing to worry about. Just change the oil frequently. As mentioned in another post, I was doing every 5k, but stepping down to 3k. Nothing wrong with 3k oil changes. It's what we did for years when we were younger.

It's your truck, so do as you like, but I'll share my approach.

I'm on a 5w-20 restore and protect every 3 months schedule because I plan to put 200k on the truck and live in a warmer climate. I use the amsoil filter (99% rated at 20 microns) and change it every other oil change. It's a 15-minute job with a drain valve. The real concern is carbon buildup in the ring lands and turbo. Annual cost ~ $150, and I drive 13-15k mi annually.

Air filter I'm using the K&N oiled paper filter, the only one I could find with a 99.5% effeciency rating.

No, engines, including rings, are not broken in at the factory, and unless you're sending in oil samples, you're just guessing.

For what it's worth, I did break in changes for the driveline and was shocked by how dark the diff oil was at 5k, and the sample was fairly oxidized (60%) at that interval.

I have Banks temp sensors adapted to oil fill plugs on the diff and trans (MT). Diff operates at about 130F, trans at about 190F, and engine oil at about 200F on the highway. I'll continue to be on the cautionary side and stick with the quarterly engine oil interval and change driveline oils annually.

I do a lot of 4 stroke and 2 stroke karting, build my own engines, and with zero doubt, can say how you break an engine in, the quality of oil you use, or the oil drain intervals directly impact longevity. Most wear happens getting up to temp, when I added a pre-heater on my water cooled shifter kart engine, I was in disbelief at how it looked when I did the next top end. The piston lasted longer and had ZERO scuffing, but was dimensionally worn out.
