Got a package in the mail and was too excited not to share! We'll be posting more information and results from testing this on a variety of setups here very soon. This option will likely serve as the backbone to our upcoming "Stage 3" setup for those curious. Thought I'd share a little teaser as some of you might like to see what's coming.

100% Stock appearing (it uses the OEM housings)

Stock Turbo Specs:
• IHI SPEC VB51
• Compressor Wheel 42.87mm x 58mm
• Turbine Wheel 51mm x 40mm
• Single sleeve bearing, no thrust bearing, dual piston rings on turbine end, single on compressor

OEM Turbo Upgrade Specs:
• Built on the OEM IHI SPEC VB51 housings w/ upgraded wheels
• Comperssor Wheel 49.70mm x 67.40mm
• Turbine Wheel 54mm x 48mm
• Prototype variant uses the OE configuration CHRA. Production versions will come with a custom ball-bearing CHRA upgrade

Appreciate your enthusiasm and support! The turbo's used on the Tacoma are the same across all trim levels (including the hybrid models), so this upgrade would fit just like your OE unit on the SR trim.

I'm told it is likely to be offered complete with no core required, as a core option, and will be available with an optional install kit with a complete set of gaskets, hardlines, nuts, hoses and clamps to completely replace your OE unit.

I'll be sharing a list of all the part numbers for these parts should you seek to procure them yourself or just need a replacement.

An approximate 40% additional airflow potential, bringing the output potential up pretty significantly over stock with proper tuning.

I'd imagine that the lower end of this engine is fairly stout -- all things considered. Now are you gonna stuff crazy PSI and expect 1000hp outta this motor.. No friggen way, but mild increases, including a turbo upgrade, I'd have to guess would be just fine as long as you're not straying into exotic fuels and ultra high compression.

But really it boils down to the rings ability to deal with the extra compression. Unfortunately with manufacturers switching to low tension rings, I have no clue how they'd fare with the increased pressure as I've not seen inside of one of these engines. However, personally, I believe this engine is built right so I'd have to speculate that the engine will be just fine. Just my 2 cents from an age old computer network engineer (lol)

This guy does a great job summarizing the strengths and compromises in the 2.4Turbo engine. I'm still very curious about the "crankshaft hammering" Sheldon mentioned, specific to the MT tune, but I look forward to seeing the weak links emerge as the platform is pushed.

All that said, I'm glad to see the development like this high-flow turbo. It would be super tempting to upgrade the turbo along with a Banks inlet elbow, boost tubes, and intercooler when available.

I fully plan to put 200k plus on my truck, and in that vein would be curious if the turbo kit could be fitted with a post oiler as well.

Glad to hear it! We’re pretty excited too — this setup has been in the works for a while, and it should finally give us the headroom the stock turbo just can’t support. We’ll be posting data from testing very soon so everyone can see what it’s capable of in real-world conditions.

We’ll have full dyno data and test results once development is finished, but based on preliminary modeling, we’re expecting around a 40% increase in flow potential over the stock turbo. On the upper end, that could mean up to ~425whp with high-octane fuels or ethanol blends. On typical pump gas, I’d expect something closer to ~350-375whp (on a gas truck). Of course, we’ll defer to the actual dyno results once the turbo is on the truck and properly tuned.

To your second point: yes, a proper tune is required. The factory calibration is designed around the stock turbo’s flow limits and won’t make use of the larger compressor and turbine wheels. With our calibration tailored for the new hardware, we’ll be optimizing fueling, ignition, cam phasing, boost targets, and torque management to safely unlock the extra headroom this turbo provides.

Great question, and one we’re keeping a close eye on, which is precisely why we perform this kind of development on our own vehicles, not on customer trucks. The short answer is yes, the internals can handle it, within reason. This upgrade was intentionally spec’d as a conservative option that does not exceed the mechanical capability of the OE engine. Toyota built these engines with a decent amount of headroom, and everything we’ve seen in testing so far suggests the internals are up to the task when paired with a safe calibration.

We’re not building “race trucks” with this package. Our entire development philosophy and upgrade path is centered on giving owners more performance without compromising the core design and purpose of these trucks. We’re not going to release anything that undermines why you bought the vehicle in the first place.

Stage 3 is meant to give the platform room to grow and to provide something with more potential than Stage 1 for those who want it, but not to turn the engine into a hand-grenade.
