Transmission Replaced Issue Confirmed

Got mine new in June of 24 and just crossed 15k miles this week. I'd say I've experienced the harsh up and downshifts like you described maybe 9-10 times since it was new. My VIN is not part of the transmission TSB and it hasn't done it in a long time... probably since the 7k mile mark or so. I'm not really sure what to chalk it up to... possibly fluid or mechanical or could just be the computer having a wonky moment. I really don't know... but I will occasionally hammer on it in sport mode and it never seems to have an issue. At this point I think it's fine.

They do seem to be at their smoothest when they're up to normal temp, which leads me to believe it's likely a fluid level thing. I have read that the fluid used in these has crazy thermal expansion, so if it's a little crotchety when cold then I take that as a sign that it might be a tiny bit low on juice.

Yeah, I’ve had similar things like you’re describing the different this time. I really don’t know what chalk it up to either.

I know they like to act a little funny and cold, but this was at temperature for almost all the issues with the exception of the first time it happened yesterday.

But after taking it on the freeway which it was fine once I got back to side street speed 35-50 it was having issues again.

Mine is an 11/24 build. I had some occasional, mildly noticeable harsh shifting in the beginning when it was cold, but nothing since. Honestly, I had forgotten about it.

UPDATE: I just received a call back my transmission was throwing no codes, and they tried replacing the fluid and flushing it and trying that to see if it resolved the issue.

However, none of it did and there is no code.

But the text said and I quote “ there is definitely something wrong with it”
Sent it off to Toyota and they said just replace the whole thing. Said hopefully ill have it back in a week or two.

Nobody wants their new truck opened up to get a new transmission, but it is not a complicated repair and I think that was the best outcome. In the long run you will be better off with that rather than some kind of repair. I hope it gets back to you soon and I also hope they gave you a loaner while you wait.

Yea the gray area is they are replacing the whole unit no questions asked.

But the tech said they weren’t able to identify the issue without tearing into it more and Toyota told them to just replace the whole thing no questions asked.

Makes me wonder if it’s just good customer service or if they know there’s some kind of issue already.

Either way full replacement definitely better then small repair I agree

It's probably cheaper for them to replace the transmission rather than remove it, inspect all the internals and replace everything that might be damaged, rebuild it, and hope the problem was fixed and will last the length of the warranty. If not fixed, remove and inspect again, etc.

Makes sense.
All in all so far it’s gone about as smooth as it reasonably can considering the issue.

Said it should be done by end of next week.

Will update with cost of parts and confirmed issues if they find one .

I think I a a good thing? Vs a tech thinking they found the problem, and playing wack a mole!

I would ask if there is debris in the fluid? If there is some, the debris could hang out in the cooling lines and mess up a new transmission.

Agreed fully. I would still be mad if it happened to mine, but as long as I'm not out any cash myself, I'd just take the replacement and send it. Drive that thing like you mean it and enjoy it!

These days you have to get the MT while it's still available. Very cool that the Tacoma still has the option.

All things considered so far other then it going out things have been handled well.

Hopefully that doesn’t change.

And yea if I have another trans issue under warranty I may consider seeing the cost of switching to M/T

I like the benefits of the trans but I plan on keeping this truck a very long time kind of defeats the purpose if the trans blows again.

have 3 tacoma's in the family. 17k on 10/24 build no issues, 62k on 6/24 build, in the trans recall windows, no issues, 24 trail hunter 9k no issues.

Mines going back on Tuesday for the 4th time to see if Toyota will finally replace my transmission. It's been 2 years of clunking, jolting, bucking, shudders at low speeds
