Got this yesterday morning... was a cold morning (in the Bay Area, CA... so not THAT cold) and I had leaned out the front door to remote start the truck. It started fine, so I walked back inside to get my boy ready for school. Five minutes later we come outside, and the truck is no longer running... that's weird. Get inside, start her up, and get the following on my dash:

Apparently "this is a thing", and sometimes comes with Grille Shutter errors as well (mine did not). It drove fine, but had me stressing, but took the son to school, and then straight to the dealer. I have just over 6500 miles. They kept it all day, then called me in the afternoon to ask if they could "keep it overnight... it feels like something to do with the cold weather, and they'd like to cold start it themselves tomorrow morning". I said "uh, sure" and am waiting to hear back today what they come back with. If this is truly "cold weather related" and I live in Antioch, CA, I can't imagine this bodes well for people who live in actual cold weather, like where it snows, etc?

I'll report back when they close the loop, but am hoping it's not some part that requires replacing that they simply don't have in stock, etc.

Ugh.

If it’s an early 2024, it may be the grille shutters. The earlier o rings on the electrical connection was to thin allowing water to get in and cause a short with similar error codes.

This happened to my early '24 around 400 miles. I unplugged the battery for 10 mins, it went away, and never has come back since. (25k+ miles)

hope they got you a loaner man
lol no, the first day they were "going to give me a lift home" but after waiting in the lobby for 30 min and noticing I was still not top of the list, I just grabbed an uber. Could have raised a fuss, but CBF

Same thing happened to me. Took it to the dealer and we checked the code on their obd2 scanner. This is what came up:

P0420: It means the Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1),

We cleared the code and it went away for good. (That was 4-5 months ago)

I have a 24' trail Hunter with 30,000km on it for reference .

Just to close the loop, they basically found nothing wrong, replaced the MAF, and called it a day.

I didn't expect a miracle, but they kinda wrote it up in a way like I was demanding to have my vehicle back, so their hands were tied:

this was after they had had it for two nights, called me and told me they were at a loss, and there was no obvious fix. At every point in this process I told them "i mean do what you need to, but I'd like to eventually get it back" (again, no offer of a loaner or anything of that sort).

Anyway, I have it back, will repost if it comes up again, but just closing the loop here for y'all.

aaaand it's back.

I dropped it back with toyota, and this time they gave me a brand new highlander as loaner so that's nice :)

,

I mentioned to them that both time it has happened, it was during the "three click on the keyfob to remote start" the truck. Not sure if it's relevant, but we'll see. They'll probably keep it for a few days, and I'll report back if I have any news.

6500 miles on a 24 is a lot of short trips.

Unrelated to the short trips... this sounds like an injector issue, after all their diagnosis so far. Maybe there was a batch of bad injectors or O rings etc.

Interested to see what they find.

to close the loop here, and put a pin in the final fix:

Toyota was completely baffled by the error, and threw a bunch of spaghetti. They were basically drawing a blank. The noticed my ECU had been flashed (they can see this by performing a checksum or something, and seeing a different value than what they expect), and immediately halted any more troubleshooting, saying A) this was obviously the issue and 2) I would be paying out of pocket for any further diagnoses.

I have had an OTT tune done, so reached out to Justin and the team at Overland Tailor Tune, and Justin was WAY more helpful in troubleshooting the issue. He asked a few questions, based on the fact that Toyota kep mentioning the MAF and Lean Trim values, and we determined I had not let OTT know I had a TRD Pro intake installed. I had not done this on my own, and -in fact- it answers a funny "blank" line item that I had in the paperwork for my truck when I bought it:

Apparently, the dealer chucked on a TRD Pro intake on my engine, and I just assumed the fancy red chonk in my engine was just how they came stock:

Once we put this all together, Justin told me I would need an updated tune file to compensate for this, and I just got it done today in Pacifica.

HUGE shout out to @JustDSM and JC at Central Coast Tuning for standing behind their products, knowing exactly what can go wrong, and how to fix it.

I have said it in many threads, and will say it again here loud and clear: The $650 cost to tune your truck is hands down the best upgrade money can buy. Toyota builds these fantastic pieces of engineering, then California or the EPA comes along and is like "AKSHUALLLY.... WE NEED IT TO RUN LIKE GARBAGE SO NANCY PELOSI CAN CONTINUE TO COMMIT INSIDER TRADING UNIMPEDED. IF YOU COULD JUST GIMP THE ENGINE VIA SOFTWARE AND MAKE IT RUN LIKE CRAP THAT'D BE GREAT, THANKS".

The flash truly "unlocks" your engine, and is immediately felt. Not "i think it feels better" placebo crap. It runs BETTER. I noticed before leaving the parking lot the first day I had it flashed. My bad for not even knowing I had an 'aftermarket' Air Intake, and shout out to the guys for figuring out the fix and getting me reflashed ASAP.

Thread closed for now, I'll repost if anything comes back up, but I think we're good here.

lol I bet there's gonna be a nation wide dealer memo going out

"Verify if truck has third party tune before diagnosing misfire issues"

rip :cwl:

also nothing against u bro but if you have an aftermarket tune, why not just flash back to stock as the first step for troubleshooting?

you don't have any tune-dependent parts like a turbo, dp etc so that is the first step almost always for a tuned vehicle

yeah I got the tune from a tune shop (Central Coast Tuning), so don't have the laptop/files on hand to do myself. I've flashed a BRZ in the past, but haven't done the "windows XP laptop + USB Dongle lol" on the truck (yet).
