Everyone has an opinion on oil and many experts. Here is what I know:
They use an oil close to the consistency of water in these trucks to help meet fuel economy and probably emissions standards in Canada and the States.
In other parts of the world these same engines use heavier oil , even in Mexico I heard.
I do not think a bit heavier oil will hurt it, probably even better for it.
I too have free oil changes and Toyota has been using the recommended 0w20. I’m at 22,500 miles (36,250 km). I’ve done 3 oil changes. 4th on tap.
I don’t like the recommended interval and change more frequently than Toyota and will use a slightly heavier oil after warranty. I am still researching what grade oil to use.
That is my belief, others believe differently. I have done my own oil changes for decades on different vehicles. Never lost an engine.

This oil is really thin, so it must have to get to some tight spaces, yet the same engine is also recommended by Toyota for a heavier oil in other places. Correct me if wrong here.

So you don't use the 0w20? I just hit 25k and the dealer done the first ones free so it has been running 0w20. Will it still be ok to change? What are the +/- of using the heavier oil? Thx

I'm partially to blame for that. I was genuinely curious about the viscosity and interval. As these trucks get old enough to finally start accumulating some miles it's just it's nice to know what seems to be working for some people.

They answered "Valvoline 5w30 every 5k miles". That's all I was asking for....nothing more, nothing less. I did not forsee it turning into a "my oil can beat up your oil" ass fest.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this up. You’ve also got a great combination of parts on this truck. The Mishimoto intake, SXTH intercooler and E30 calibration work really well together.

And for anyone reading this, this isn't a truck that gets babied. You actually use the performance and have put 33k miles on it doing it. That kind of long-term, real-world experience is incredibly valuable to me and to the development of CAMTuning.

It’s also been great working with someone who is genuinely an enthusiast, pays attention to what the truck is doing, and gives useful feedback. Customers like you are a big part of how I continue to refine these calibrations.
