Coolant Change Procedure?

Hello, I cannot seem to find anything online for the proper procedure to drain and fill coolant on the T24A-FTS. It also seems that Toyota is censoring the factory service manual from the public. I am coming up on 80,000 km in the next year and want to make sure I am doing the proper procedure for changing my coolant. Does anyone know what the proper way to do it is on these new engines? Thanks!

Ive always used one of these buckets funnels that seal to the radiator cap. Fill the funnel with coolant, pull the plug on the funnel....open the petcock, let it drain while keeping the funnel topped off, and from emptying completely. You do an air free exchange of old/new fluid in the radiator. Fool proof.

Thank you for the reply. I have that exact tool I used on my Honda Civic with the universal adapters. I was mainly concerned because of the electric coolant control valve on the new motors. I don't know if there is a special procedure to open/close it for refilling. Also, I don't see a radiator cap under my hood, just the coolant overflow reservoir, which does not appear to have a pressurized cap.

Thank you so much man! I was just reading through it and it says to "switch the water control valve to injection control and warm up the engine" but does not describe how to change the mode of the valve. I would imagine you need some kind of dealership computer program to change the position of the valve manually.

You're going to need a bi-directional scan tool to perform many maintenance procedures, including this one.
I have an Xtool D8W that has this functionality and would recommend Xtool.

Ah ok, I see. I will have to buy one when the time comes in a few months. I hope someone releases that service manual again for public purchase. I should have bought myself a copy while I still could, it is very helpful!

The factory coolant recommended change cycle is 100,000 miles not Kilometers. You have quite a ways to go.

The Car Care Nut on YouTube recommends the first coolant change to be 100,000 miles or 5 years, which ever comes first. After that every 50,000 miles or 5 years, which ever comes first. A little late to the conversation here again, but I am wondering what the special function looks like to actuate the water control valve to injection mode. I am looking at the XTOOL D7S, but I am not sure if the Special Functions change depending on the make and model. It seems like most reviews show it being able to actuate the "Electric Pump" on other Dynamic Force engines, but I am wondering if the scan tool specifically lists the "Water Control Valve" as a Special Function when plugged into a 2024+ Tacoma.

Great, thank you. I assume this is what the maintenance manual is referring to when it mentions putting the water control valve in injection mode. I wonder if it is Water Route Switching Valve #1 or #2? It seems like they purposely make this a pain to do DIY...

UPDATE:
I just did the coolant change myself, it is super easy and I did not need any special tools to do it. Just drain the coolant from the petcock with the tank cap and interface degas plug removed, should get around 8 litres out of it. Then close the petcock and fill the tank up to the B line on the tank (above F line near the top of tank) and squeeze the upper and lower rad hoses a few times (coolant will slash out of degas valve since it is still out). After you do that just reinstall the rad tank cap and plastic degas valve screw (DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!!! 18 in-lb only). Start the engine and let it warm up for a few mins while squeezing the upper and lower rad hoses, then have someone rev it to 3000 RPM with climate control off, and while it is being revved, continue squeezing the upper and lower rad hoses. After a minute or two, return to idle and do this again a few times until you feel the upper rad hose get warm. Keep a very close eye on the coolant temp gauge the whole time. Shut it off, let it fully cool down (takes several hours) and check the level in the tank. Adjust as required, and keep some spare coolant with you for a couple weeks as the system slowly burps out all the air (you may have to refill it slightly after some driving so check the tank regularly when the engine is cold).

Overall it was a very simple procedure and despite what the service manual says, there is no need for a fancy vacuum fill tool or a bidirectional scan tool. The water valve will automatically open once the coolant is up to temp, and the system burps itself thanks to the expansion tank. Hope this helps anyone else wanting to DIY the coolant on the 4th gen!

I was going to mention, that I believe leaving the HVAC system off and revving the engine opens the coolant distribution valve. I think it's actually a series of revs above 2k rpm for a few seconds, followed by idling, then rev again, repeated several times.

Correct. TCCN has a video on how to open the coolant valve for Dynamic Force engines. The condition is HVAC off, 2000 RPM or greater until the electric engine fan cycles twice. The TIS manual just says over 3000 RPM until it’s warm but doesn’t mention the HVAC setting. I’m glad it was so easy.
