I would personally never ask for a “donation” if I had the means to support myself. In other words, if I had equity in something with real value, I would use that before asking total strangers for money.


Have we forgotten how borrowing from a bank works? If you have equity in a vehicle or another asset, you can leverage it to get a loan and, frankly, save face.


If you can’t—or simply don’t want to—take out a loan, then you shouldn’t be surprised or offended when others are put off by a donation request. Asking people for money while offering nothing in return can reasonably feel offensive to some; it comes across as begging.


If this were about basic survival, that would be one thing. But asking for money to fund a trip? It’s astonishing that the idea even crossed your mind, let alone that it was posted publicly for the entire world to see.
