Low fuel light came on and I drove it to the pump with about 20 miles remaining per the computer. It took 14 gallons to fill which would imply that there was 4 gallons in the tank. Wondering if theyre overly conservative on purpose or if this will be a future software update to more accurately represent the situation.

Clearly I have not.
Yea, didn’t mean to sound harsh but it’s been discussed heavily on multiple sites.

Empty light with 4 gallons remaining is a bit outside the norm. Most of us are filling 15 gallons.

4 gallons is about normal from what I can tell. That also makes the range look way lower than it really is.

Why? Only Toyota knows and they are not talking.

If i remember, my third gen was about the same. Even on a bone empty tanks saying there was 20 miles left, it would only take about 17-18 gallons of the 21 gallon tank. I think they just leave a healthy reserve in there.

Makes sense I guess. Toyota is all about reliability and encouraging people to run their tank low consistently is hard on the fuel pump. That’s my theory anyways.

I think they made a smaller tank which weighs less and can improve fuel milage slightly so Toyota can get closer to meeting stricter emissions regulations. Plus I think Toyota is cautious about fuel and it takes into account a reserve amount and the design of tank for the fuel pump. Not good to keep running to low all the time for fuel pump. I do wish the tank was a little bigger.
