At best, I’m a weekend warrior, and almost all of my off-roading is confined to sand. This truck is babied, in other words.

What’s your experience with the bumper to bumper Toyota provides for the first 3 years? I’m wondering if I should expect to go to war with Toyota or if they’re going to make this easy.

I would think it's gonna depend entirely on how you word it to the dealer and their customer service. A pot hole technically isn't going to be covered as it would be considered an "accident or act of god" situation rather than what it REALLY is (weak strut mounts). Unless there is a recall or TSB there would technically be no requirement on their end, however it would be covered under your insurance. Although deductibles might be more expensive.

The good news is, it's a known issue amongst the community and aftermarket so there are plenty of permanent solutions. Some of which you could possibly discuss with your dealer about installing since they're probably doing the repair anyway. Icon makes a plate that sandwiches between the strut mounts and the tower. Wescott designs makes a Billet mount, which also acts as a leveling kit. Of course there's the option of aftermarket struts. You would have to pay for those options out of pocket of course but the dealer might make you a deal on labor.

Some top-hat failures have been reported. When was your truck made? I suspect Toyota has solved the issue by now.

Off the top of my head without the VIN in front of me, I’m gonna say April 2024.

Given others have had similar issues I’m probably going to ham it up with customer service a little bit. Cause the thing was, it wasnt even an especially bad pot hole. Think I’ll lead with “I was driving over some uneven road and then I heard a big knock”.

Yeah that's not your shock failing that's the top hat failing lol

His strut assembly didn't fail though, the top hat did lmao

Nothing should cause that to fail aside from a catastrophic accident (other shit would be broken). It's definitely a design/part issue. If the top hat is blown and the wheel/tire/shock assembly is fine there's a part quality issue.

No need to be so straight with Toyota, just say you were driving down the road and heard a bang. But these are trucks, huge perk to truck ownership is blowing through potholes like they're nothing.

I've gone through ruts big enough to tweak my alignment and bottom out and I haven't broken anything. 100% a part issue.

Guys at work have hit stuff so hard they bent rims on a f250 and the shock mount was fine. Needed an alignment tho

Checks out 100%

The order shit breaks in is usually that, wheel/tire assembly damaged, then strut bent or blown + LCA bent, or just extremely out of alignment, then like if you do this:

You're sending struts through the top hat. But not before you bend or damage all those other suspension components lol

This is a known problem with the top hat on the 24. Since you were driving in a parking lot and hit a speed bump , this should be a warranty issue, Don't take any c*** and your ground, If they give you any grief , call corporate

If you can afford it, I'd buy a real suspension like kings or icon. I love my king's suspension. I can run over anything I can clear and I haven't have any problems.

Technically, the city/county/state agency responsible for the road is liable to reimburse you for the damage to your vehicle.

You could also submit a comprehensive insurance claim, since it is damage that occurred while driving. They would subrogate it to the aforementioned public agency.

I'm not sure if Toyota will warranty it. Depends on how friendly your service department is feeling. You were driving on a public road that was bumpy, and every other vehicle made it though that section of road, right? Unless there was a line of damaged cars on the side of the road...
