he recently posted on youtube a discussion on using 0-20 vs 5-20 or any other weights offered in different countries. Basically his take is that engines that "require" 0W-20 have the oil pump that is electrically controlled, I think he said, that it is set to work with 0W-20 and cannot adjust for other oil weights. Some thing to think about maybe.
Actually it might have been the car care nut, or maybe both discussed this

Then why does Toyota recommend 5w30 and even 10w30 oil in the European market? What engine has an electronically controlled oil pump? The pump is a mechanical device…. The only way to control it is by restriction on either the suction side or pressure side of a pump- show me where this occurs with this engine.

I think it might have been the car care nut that said this. One would need to watch it again to understand his point he makes. Was surprising to me too, but also makes sense. So....?

This would not be the first time the car care nut has said stuff that makes no sense.
It could be, but he is a trained Master Toyota Technician. Me? I own wrenches and sockets and have no training.

Here's a clip from him. I'll keep using 0W-20.

He does have Toyota service/repair knowledge but sometimes he makes too many clickbait statements. You just have to sort out the good from the bad.

I am going to use 0W-20 also. I used it exclusively in my Tundra and drove it for 14 years without any issues. Of course that truck had the legendary 5.7L V8 that was known for running forever.

I have used his video's to do some engine maintenance on the V6 in the RAV4 we had, and how to change the transmission fluid on the 2017 hybrid RAV4. His tutorials are excellent.

Yeah, his maintenance tutorials are great. He lost my support somewhat when he did a clickbait video about what a piece of crap my Pro is. I know that helps with his YouTube income stream, but it hurt his rep, at least with those of us who love our TRD Pros.

Seems like there are a few guys here that don't want to deviate from the manual because they've always done it that way. It's your call - you will probably get through the warranty period just fine, and probably longer. But when Lake makes these decisions, he's using hard data from oil analysis. He is not basing what fluid he uses or the interval on his feelings or how he's done things in the past; he is following the path to MINIMIZE wear. So yes, the OEM recommendation will probably keep your wear rate within limits for whatever engine life Toyota has decided on, but that doesn't mean it's optimal.

Yeah, he seemed in a bad mood making that video. Oh well. He's also Tundra guy - I am NOT.
