I have always filled the filter then poured out the oil that doesn’t soak in. I don’t think it matters. My mechanic doesn’t prefill. Can’t imagine that there’s any harm either way.

So I emailed Amsoil to ask for its position on this subject. They responded and recommended to prefill whenever possible depending on the orientation of the filter.

Yet, this engine builder says it is a must to pre fill to save main bearings. This clip is only showing the lengthy route the oil travels, but other videos he times just how long it takes system to pressurize on the test stand.



Cummins says - pre-fill
Caterpillar says - no

Gas engines are different system vs. diesel.

MFG is only worried about making it through warranty period.......

I believe that you should do whatever gives you peace of mind, and whatever your wallet can afford long term if you choose to be your own warranty dept.

Where did you come up with that? If an auto maker's engines were blowing at 60,000 miles, who would buy?

I've changed my oil twice and can't imagine attempting to pre-fill the filter before installing it. In truth, I suspect once you add the oil, the filter is full.
