Oil change, is it even worth going to the dealer for the “free oil changes to 25k miles”?

I asked my dealer if I need to do it a 5K for the first oil change. He said oil change intervals are 10k. Is the something I missed in the owner's manual about the 1k break in oil change or did you just do this as a precaution?
That is pretty much standard when it comes to new engine break in. When I build a new engine I will change the oil and filter at 500 and 1k miles to get any metal out right away.

That is pretty much standard when it comes to new engine break in. When I build a new engine I will change the oil and filter at 500 and 1k miles to get any metal out right away.
I've done that with rebuilt engines. I had an 86 Grand National and that was the procedure. Did that on my 78 Trans Am.
I've bought several new Toyotas over the last 15 years and the dealer never scheduled my first service at 1k to change the "break in oil". Does Toyota usual a different weight/viscosity from the factory that warrants the 1K oil change?

Most Toyota owners are more familiar with their vehicle than the dealer, parts or service department. They need to get these guys trained up!

I just hit 1,100 miles and want to do it this weekend for peace of mind.

I remember those Eagle Talon TSI's. Yeah, been a turbo monkey all my life lol!

Ya, I don't trust the dealers either. Took my 24 Taco in for the "free maintenance" at 5K; 2 hours later they informed me that I had a rat infestation in my engine which required steam cleaning for $100. I sighed, asked them if they were kidding, said no and drove away. Not planning on coming back...

At 5k miles I changed my own oil and filter, and went in for the 5k service of tire rotation and maybe they check other things. I requested my cousin since hes a tech and they said sure and scheduled accordingly. Except he was gone, and they didnt tell me. My truck ended up going to the kid they call "nascar" and I found out about it a while later. Hes called nascar because he zips the lugnuts on and off without even slowing down the impact and slams the socket into your wheels. He scratched all 4 of mine, actualy chipping the paint off and rounding some of the lug nuts.

I will say the dealer handled it. Granted I had just ceramic coated my wheels. They swapped on a set of wheels and tires and lugnuts from another new tacoma to make it right fast. They said the tech was known to do this and had many reports of the issue.

I have never trusted anyone with any of my vehicles, and I wish I could be back their with them. I think my dash cam will ease my mind a bit for the next service.
NASCAR, I may have met that guy in Pensacola at the local dealer; instead of using a hand tool on my wheel locks, he used an impact wrench and stripped the tool socket key and the wheel lock. Had to wait two weeks for them to get in a new set of wheel locks so I can get my tires rotated at my free 20k service. Needless to say, I now own an additional set of wheel locks, and socket key

The service departments in dealerships in Central Texas are horrible. They have no idea what Toyota even prescribes in their own manuals.

I'm beyond 20K now, but I wish I had the 15 hours back that I spent sitting around Toyota's crappy service for the free maintenance.

Good luck trying to get all of these recalls addressed if you don't have time to drop your truck off for a day.

Went to dealer after scheduling oil change and the free 6000 mile maintenance. They said they don’t change the oil until 10000 miles even though I was paying for it. So I said okay and went to same place I got oil changed at 1000 miles. My truck is 1 year old and I have almost 7000 miles. 4000 was driving to Colorado and back one weekend. I got 22 mpg driving there and 18 coming back with a trailer.

I definitely take the 2 oil changes free from the dealer. I took one at 500 miles and paid for that one. At 5000 I let them pay for it. At 10k miles they can do the 2nd one on them. But, I'll still return to them for all subsequent oil changes because it's convenient. (and I have a very good shop at home and even have an oil vacuuming system) Somebody mentioned the 5W-30 in an earlier part of this thread. That really bothers me. As soon as this is out of warranty I switch to 5w-30. The 0w-30 really bothers me. I warm up every start with at least 30 second and most times one minute

How does 5w30 oil bother you?

With all the dealer horror stories on here, you'd think that Toyota would insist on some type of dealer service quality control throughout their system. They spend billions on research, development, and manufacturing on their vehicles and then turn them over to Nascar (from the earlier post). Doesn't make sense.
