Okay so I’m wondering why everyone is going back to 17” wheels? Does it give you more room for bigger tires or what? I just picked up my 25 trd sport and was thinking of doing 18x9 +20 with a 1.5 level. I see everyone going 0 offset on 17’s running 285. Just curious

Totally happy with my 18’s. I think everyone thinks they will be overlanding rock crawling warriors, but in reality they are 99.5% freeway commuters like me and I think 18’s are just fine for that. .

17" wheels give lots of tire choices. They also give you ample side wall for on road or off cushion. The extra sidewall also gives you more room to air down.

I had never really thought of it in that way. I thought people were doing just to try to get 35’s without much of a rub.

The height of the tire, say a 35 on an 17-18" rim will remain the same, but the side wall gains an inch on the 17". That said, you will still get rub with either size rim unless the off set is correct and the vehicle lift correct.

Lots of great input here and I’ll also add, I personally like the size of a 17” vs an 18” rim along with the amount of sidewall you get on the 17.
I know I won’t be doing hardcore off-road, technical routes or rock crawling. I will do dirt roads, fire roads, washboards and less technical 4x4 routes so airing down is important. Ride quality is important.
I didn’t go with a true 35x12.5 tire. They’re heavier and more expensive.
Offset is key.
