With the new trucks all coming out im thinking of selling my 24, trd hybrid , it’s all set up how i wanted, premium package , blah, blah.
My hopes are toyota gets the engines blowing up corrected, i will more then likely hold out for the HD Tundra, a Dually Diesel would be great, yes i know fuel prices suck but arent going to last……The taco is great however just to confining for me , i have had Toyotas since i was 18, and at 60 I love them, but again to me i just desire a full size truck, ranch work, …..so im keeping my eyes out for the next version of the tundra

I wouldn't rule out a Chevy Silverado with the 2.7 Turbo. That engine is turning out to be the best engine GM makes. Great power and torque and very good reliability. Good looking truck too.

As for the Tundra? The V35 engine has been spinning bearings since 2017 when it first appeared in the Lexus LS500. No one heard about it because it was a low volume, $100k+ niche vehicle. Fast forward to 2021 and suddenly it reared it's ugly head when it was thrust into 100s of 1000s of vehicles. The V35 is produced in 2 locations, Japan and Alabama. Doesn't matter where or when it was built, they have the same issues. There is something fundamentally wrong with it.

I get the smallness of the Tacoma coming from full size Rams and GM’s. However I legitimately think the Tacoma is the only new truck worth buying. Even with its cheap plastics interior. Kinda sad.
I am considering adding a mint condition 2000- 2006 Silverado or Sierra to my fleet. That way I have my big truck when needed and the Tacoma for 90% of the other stuff I use my truck for. I wouldn’t touch a new GM.

There is never going to be a dually diesel Tundra. You will be waiting forever. If you want a dually diesel (WHY? Do you routinely tow 40,000 lbs?) then get a Ford, Dodge, or Chevy 3500.

Because if you’re pulling a cattle trailor loaded with multiple horses, or hauling Hy rolls , then you may like a Dually . Fueled and filled from dieasel pump located on ranch…

If you need a diesel dually, you'd already have one and not a Tacoma. lol You aren't doing any of the things you listed with a Tacoma.

Where did you hear that Toyota was even considering a dually diesel tundra? They don’t even have a single diesel engine available that would be capable of competing with the domestic HD trucks, most of which (if not all) have 400+ hp and 1000+ lb/ft of torque. Toyota would have to design and develop an all new diesel engine - and then release it right as diesel is cresting $7.00 a gallon.

It will never happen. Never.

Buy a Ford, Chevy, GMC or Ram if you need a HD dually diesel.

My buddy has a newer Tundra, we took that on our last hunt. That was the most un truck ive been in lately. Felt and rattled and bottomed out like a station wagon. Try the Ram with the 6.4 hemi. The one I traded for this Taco fit and finish was better in every way. Only bad part is. how big they are.

I mean, they really wouldn't have to design an engine. One of the largest producers of individual diesel engines is Kubota. Who also happens to not be partnered with any manufacturer and is Japanese. They also have an engine that size already. Of course there's the red tape of on highway vs off highway emissions but I could see it happening. All of the big 3 partnered with a third party for their diesels. International built Fords, Cummins still builds Rams, Isuzu for GM. Not to mention the long history of using outside sourced gas engines from Yamaha and more recently BMW.

Not saying it will happen. But if any other manufacturer on the planet wanted to break in and compete in the light/medium duty truck market, Toyota could do it rather easily.

You are probably right! Good thinking.

I really wish we could get a small 4 cylinder turbodiesel in the Tacoma. Maybe a 2.0 liter with 180ish hp, 300+ lbft

And GM was also in bed with Detroit Diesel for years. That 6.2 with and without the turbo was everywhere back in the day....even in the Hummer.

Am I dreaming, or was CAT a sponsor for the Toyota racing team at one point? I heard they make diesels.
Cat actually pulled out of all on road diesels. Unless it changed, its still that way. Which is funny, because they were the number one I believe in heavy duty truck if not number two.

But when emissions hit diesels back in 05, Caterpillar realized that DEF was an outdated unreliable solution they didn't want their name associated with. So they bet the farm trying to come up with something new, from scratch, without enough time to get it done. Which nearly ruined the whole company.
