Something you guys could also try is doing your freeway drives in S7. I tried that out as an MPG experiment and as a side effect of higher cruising RPMs the oil temp (as per Scan Gauge) sat around 220F the entire drive home instead of usial 200-208.

MPG was not affected by using S7 instead of letting the truck shift to 8th, but I kept it below 65.

Or 5th for MT guys

I think this is a great idea Izzy. I'm going to try it tomorrow.
The funny part is that I didn't notice an appreciable difference in MPG using 7th gear.

Which is not surprising because MPG is mostly based on load and not RPM (which is compounded when you have a turbo).

But yeah I think overdrive is super long in these trucks, which I guess is fine but the truck just sits there in 8th, and will use boost instead of downshifting to accelerate from 60-70mph, which feels very luggy.

You might see the oil temp gauge move slightly past center (which is strange because imo 220F is within normal operating range). Maybe the gauge is just more honest in these trucks than other modern vehicles with oil temp gauges.

Curious to see how your experiment goes!

Yeah, I do that too. The last (first) oil change used the 5 qt Mobil1, and about 2/3 of the quart, so about right on. It's at the upper mark on one side, and about 2/3 the way up the dipstick on the other side. Pick one!
