Hey guys I've had my New Tacoma about 5 weeks.. It's my first new vehicle in awhile.. When I got it I noticed the parking brake noise when it activates and basicly I watched on our outside camera and it seems loud... Is this normal? I'm hoping so.... Loving my TRD OR so far thanks for any feed back... Also I know it's been mentioned but my engine fan comes on and off all the time maybe 2-3 times a minute when at a stop light... $50k truck just wanna make sure everything is good

Had a handful of new vehicles that had electric parking brakes , they all make that noise when engaging .

Happy that it engages and disengages automatically. Rented a mazda that you had to disengage it every time you put it in drive , it was irritating.

Thanks for the replies... Ya I'm coming from a 97 Camry... I like that it's automatic... But the noise seemed loud... When I first got the truck I thought it was the turbos ? ?...

Normal, and if it makes you feel better, my Lexus RX350 also makes the same noise ?

Old post, but that's the electronic parking brake engaging when you throw it into park. This can be disabled by holding the parking brake button down for ~3-5 seconds. Which will then make it a "manual" e-brake by only engaging when you actually push the button vs automatically engaging every time when parking.

Something strange has happened. My 2025 Tacoma had the same sound every single time when shifting into park. Now the truck went in for usual dealer service and they connected the OBD scanner (Toyota GTS+) just to scan for codes. They may have updated the firmware/software. Now, the truck never makes that sound again.

OK sorted now. it works just like before.

PSA: auto parking brake stopped working after a dealer visit?

Check the setting before assuming a fault.

On the 4th-gen Tacoma the EPB auto-applies when you shift into Park — that servo whir is normal. If it suddenly goes quiet after service, the most likely cause isn't a firmware update or a failed actuator. It's that the auto mode got toggled off, and it's a driver setting anyone can flip in seconds.

Diagnose it first. In Park, pull the EPB switch. If the motor runs and the red BRAKE light comes on, your EPB is fine and you are not stuck in maintenance mode. Maintenance mode disables the parking brake entirely and throws a warning — it doesn't just quietly kill the auto-apply.

The toggle (engine on, seatbelt on, in Drive, foot on brake):

  • Push and hold ~5 sec → "auto parking brake function is deactivated"
  • Pull and hold ~5 sec → activated
Most write-ups describe this as one toggle in either direction. Confirmed on a 2025 Tacoma that the direction matters: push turns it off, pull turns it back on.

Also, be mindful that even after the parking brake sets it can adjust itself. This can occur in has little as a couple of minutes after setting it or a couple of hours after. So don't be alarmed if you're near your truck and you here a shortened version of that sound well after parking it.
