But hybrids can’t idle.
Very true. Mine shuts off when I enter my street and the ICE usually doesn't start again. The smart thing to do is not drive it like a maniac for the last mile or so, which I think it what the owner's manual recommends.

I bet if you romp on the Hybrid T24A-FTS hard enough then come to a stop it'll stay idling for a while.

The 60 seconds in the owners manual is more of a baseline. They probably could have published something like "When oil temp is over 220F, let the truck idle for 1 min before shut off"

But it's easier to just do a blanket statement 60s.

That would make an interesting experiment. Maybe someone else can try that and report back. lol

Yep, and that way they don't pin themselves down as to the owner's responsibility.

More fancy turbo timers used the alternator output to estimate RPM during the driving period. If the RPM was high while the car was on, it would run the timer for longer.

I'm sure Toyota has a fancier method for the Hybrid and auto stop-start trucks :cwl: probably based on oil temp over the last trip.

Hybrid can idle, I do it all the time. I might have to fuss with it but I can get it to idle. First try when coming to a stop by turning on Tow/Haul mode. When I come to a stop and I want the engine to keep running and it shuts off I turn the Tow/Haul mode on. When it's run long enough I turn it back off and sum times it shuts off by itself or of not then I turn it off. Another way to get it started again is to put it in N and back to D.

Yeah, I know you can find ways to trick it to idle, but like … am I going to do that every time I turn off the truck? I think the toyota engineers probably thought of this issue.

OK I see where you are coming from. Just wanted to make sure people understood that there are ways to idle a hybrid if you care about turbo well being. If I find out that Toyota made provisions for oil/water to keep flowing through the turbo upon shut down, then I will gladly change my ways. My other rig is a old school Toyota turbo diesel and I always let it idle for a little bit before shutting it off.

Both the oil pump and water pump are mechanical. I'm sure the truck won't shut itself off if the turbo has oil running through it hot enough to cook the oil.

If you get the oil temp up to 230-240F I'd be really surprised if it stops the engine.

I agree. This truck beeps at me if I fart too loud. I think it knows if it’s being cooked.

Doesn't take much, any decent grade offroad uphill for 2-3 miles and the oil temp will sit around 230-240 depending on ambient.

Yeah, I know you can get the oil temp up there, but does the engine still shut down or does that high temp keep it running?

No clue, no auto stop start and no hybrid here

I just leave the truck running offroad if we need to take a pee break or take a photo, no use turning it off until you get to your destination especially if the temps are high.

You never know, it might not start again :cwl: just kidding.

My dealership also ups the factory warranty to 150,000 miles for the entire drive train.
