You are referring to "civilized" parts of Tx.
Thy driving in Utah, southwestern NM, or 200+ miles Transamerica trails with an 18.2 gallon tank.
I don't think so.
PS: I did not know Padre Island was available for overlanding. Did you start at Padre Island town?
TBH last time I drove in Utah I had 200 gallons of diesel and it was about 15 years ago. Anyways to answer your question it starts here:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/8X6gEwP9LBfxZjr9A

Ends here. 130 miles round trip on sand.

They allow camping wherever you want just stay off the dunes since there are turtle nests, snakes and other stuff they want to protect.

I do not see a bridge across the cut, so I presume you have to drive back.
Thanks

Seems common that most folks are not seeing the EPA rated mileage with their Trailhunter. We're expecting to pick one up in a couple weeks. I have not heard anything this poor though.

Don't think I caught it in the thread... have you started modifying tires, lifting, etc? Tad more context will help me appreciate your situation better.

Thx
I'm getting 14.8 MPG, no modifications, just extra weight from RTT, bed rack and CBI Covert bumper + WARN EVO 12S.

Have to smile—“no mods,” yet you've listed four of them.

You don't say, but if you're using a full-height bed rack with an RTT standing over the cab...that’s practically a wind sail. Let's tally it up:

RTT: ~150 lbs

Bed rack: ~74 lbs

CBI Covert bumper: ~104 lbs

WARN EVO 12-S winch: ~72 lbs

That's roughly 400 lbs added, not to mention the aerodynamic drag from the elevated RTT.

While I wouldn't expect such a significant drop in MPG, it's clear the setup isn't stock. Toting all that around is going to impact your mileage; it's not the 'nothing' you seem to suggest it is.

I can’t believe this thread became an argument about driving habits 🤣

With that said, I can’t wait for Long Range America to come out with their high capacity replacement tank.
Well Mr.Harry, you are correct, hardly anyone has addressed the tank issue, which was the reason I started this thread.
It is irrelevant how I drive or how fast you go, the point is TH has a small 18.2 gal tank, its mileage is way below advertised, and there is no space down there to add an auxiliary tank.
We need folk to offer solutions (besides the silliness of SLOW DOWN) and I keep hoping someone finds a builder that comes up with a larger replacement.
So far the companies mentioned have not yet put one in offer.
Thanks a lot for your post.

Its a stupidly small tank for a truck. Toyota whiffed it on this one. I did a round trip across the state with decent MPG for what I have changed and how I drive (15mpg) and still had to waste my time stopping twice. Better gas mileage than my 5th gen 4Runner and I still have to stop a lot more often.

Someone will release something, they put stupid small sizes on the LC250, 4Runner and even the GX550.

CBI Covert Bumper listed at 55-65 # not 105..

After about 4K miles, most of it on HWY driving, I find it quite hard to go more than 14mpg, normally it is below that.
Out West there are long, 75+ stretches of no gas availability and, when I start doing Overlanding I am sure the gas mileage will be around 12.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to retrofit an auxiliary tank, 5 to 10 gallons on these trucks?
Thanks a lot
I am surprised that this topic hasn't received greater attention because Toyota and third-party companies are not going to develop a cost-effective solution if user communities like this do not consider the gas tank capacity an issue for anyone who is travelling well beyond 400 km in remote areas where there are no refilling solutions.

I have a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road premium that I use for fishing and hunting in remote areas of northern Alberta, Canada and 350-400 kms on one tank is not enough. I have reached out to several third-party vendors, but no one has a solution for retrofitting the existing gas tank at the moment. This is what I have researched so far:
  1. TITAN SIDEKICK II - 15 Gallon Fluid Transfer Tank (5040115) $300-500.00
  2. https://longrangeamerica.com/ $3000.00-5000.00
  3. Vevor Gas Tank - Amazon $400.00-600.00
  4. Scepter Duramax Flo'N Go 14 Gallon Gas Caddy $200.00-300.00
I would recommend signing up for Long Range America's waiting list to demonstrate there is a need for a retrofit gas tank solution for the existing Gen 4 Tacoma's. A cost-effective solution becomes more complicated if you don't have a lockable Tonneau cover that will accommodate the size of the additional gas tank, not to mention the space in the box that you are losing due to the additional gas tank. I hope there is going to be a retrofit solution in the near future, unless Toyota provides a factory option in the years to come.

Wonderful update GWN, love to hear from fellow Canadians.
Ths is exactly what this thread needs, adding force to the undisputable fact: Toyota screwed up on the tank.
Lets try and keep this up, lets sign in for the poss tank by Longrange america and, in short: Keep on Bitching!!!!!
