Transfer case oil alternatives

I'm past due for my first xfer case oil change and I ordered the most ridiculously expensive gear oil from Toyota.. Diff Gear Oil Lf Ltr W which I believe is part # 00279-DGOLF-01.. someone correct me if I'm wrong. That crap is $50/qt! The parts guy said this oil is on back order for a few more weeks. He claims Toyota told him "it's too new for us to have stock." I didn't want to argue but I find that hard to believe since my truck is a 2024 model. Anyways, to save a bit of money and headaches of this happening in the future, are there any good alternatives to this?

I also have Amsoil gear oil 75w80 for the f&r diffs but is there really any difference for the transfer case? Amsoil's website says the same gear oil is good for the transfer case but I'm not good when it comes to reading oil specs and additives, and I didn't find anything here on the forums yet.

Check this place out for OEM diff oil. It is expensive but personally for me I’d use OEM.

The OEM t-case oil is too expensive and there is zero reason you “need” to use it. I run the same 80W-90 GL4 manual transmission oil in both my manual transmission and transfer case.

The OEM t-case fluid, while fine, is simply for fuel economy. You do not need it for the transfer case to function properly…not even close.

You should really be using GL5 fluids for the front and rear diffs. Especially considering the 2 specs are not generally cross compatible. GL5 also has twice the additives to protect the gears under high load. GL4 is fine for the t-case.

I don’t use the fluids I mentioned in the diffs. The OP is about the transfer case and I only mentioned my t-case and manual transmission.

There was a video from the CCN a while back where he talked about Toyota t-case oil and how stupidly expensive it is. I don't remember what vehicle he was under at the time. Also, he suggested an alternative. Of course, you do you, but I can tell you my Tacoma, be it a 2nd gen that I've owned since new, after 563,300 miles and using the AMSOIL severe gear fluid in my diffs and t-fer case, never have had an issue. I can't tell you the weight as I'm not home to look at a bottle.

For how often the transfer case fluid needs to be done $50 isn't terrible but there are cheaper alternatives. A couple alternatives I recommend are Redline MT-LV 70w/75w or Liqui Moly Top Tec MTF 5100 75w. You can also pretty much use any low viscosity SAE 75w GL4 MTF. Using a 75w90 or 75w80 isn't really recommended as dual viscosity fluids have entirely different flow characteristics than a low viscosity "straight" 75w.

I used Redline MT-LV 70W75 for my transfer case and Redline MT90 for my MTF (GL4 - VERY IMPORTANT) The Redline website lists it as an alternative to Toyota OEM 75W (stupidly overpriced). It is GL4 (MUST HAVE for MTF and Xfer case fluids). For diffs I used Valvoline 75W90 GL5 (GL5 is only fine for diffs as there is no brass synchros or parts). No issues whatsoever after 20k of driving it with those fluids. They are far cheaper than OEM and meet the exact same specifications.
