I am about to tow my RV (4100 lbs) from Virginia to Utah. I have read several threads and comments that have said the transmission will sometimes overheat when towing for an extended period of time up a grade. Several have said sometimes you have to pull over and let the transmission cool for about 30 minutes. I can monitor my transmission temperature via my Cobb interface. What is normal transmission temperature while towing in the 4g taco and what temp should I pull over and let it cool at?

My 2026 tranny will overheat in 2Hi when I'm in driving around dirt roads. When I shift to S-Mode and keep it in a lower gear the tranny temps drop fast, so if and when your temps start climbing try S-Mode and a lower gear.

Id start with something like this:
175°F (79°C)Normal operating temp
200°F (93°C)Fluid life starts shortening noticeably
220°F (104°C)Oxidation increases rapidly
240°F (116°C)Varnish/sludge formation begins
260°F (127°C)Seals harden; clutch damage risk
300°F+ (149°C+)Fluid can fail very quickly

I think once your tranny oil hits some of those temps it probably makes good sense to change it.

We tow a 3k teardrop. To reduce tranny heat/stress we always use tow/haul and lock it in 6th gear (S mode). 6th gear reduces gear-hunting. Gear hunting repeatedly engages and disengages the clutches and torque converter---not good. 6th gear is also 1 to 1 pass-thru (no gear conversion), so less tranny stress/heat. Lastly, 6th gear keeps the engine in the sweet spot (typically 2,500 - 3,000 rpm) at highway speeds. Win, win, win.

6th-8th gear*

Not sure if anyone knows it, but the owner’s manual suggests towing in S5 for the automatic. For towing-related heat issues with the auto, I’d suggest following that before doing anything else.

Should help the 4 banger not need as much boost and also not need to downshift as much, both of which generate heat to their respective areas (engine heat from boost, transmission heat from shifting).

I’m towing at least 5k, pretty sure more. So far, I’ve never seen the temperature rise. (engine or transmission) I expect on a very long steep hill, it would rise, but so far never even noticed a temperature change engine or transmission, so far... That Tacoma is awesome! (I use tow/haul mode but that's "it." )

I typically see 165-185*F on my Accessport pulling a 15' boat.
