Just picked up a gen 4 and immediately swapped out the tires to Wildpeak 285/70 r17 tires and kept my original stock tacoma wheels.
Looked ok as I had also popped in some RC 1 1/2" spacers in front to level it out a bit.
Here is a couple of pics with the stock rims 17 x 7.5 +55 offset.

Now my conundrum.
Just got a good deal on some Method 305's in black sized at 17 x 8.5 and +25 offset and popped them on.
Maybe its because the rims are 1" wider making the tires look fatter, as they are of course, but looks a little odd to me.

That being said I am getting a Dirt King pre runner kit installed next week and so that will raise the body a bit and create a larger gap/space around the tires next to the body making it look more proportional in my eyes.

Here's a couple pics of the methods on.
Which look better?
Fire away.

Looks fine to me, but I suppose I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to. Are you meaning that the wider wheel makes the tire itself look funny, as in less "balloon" or are you referring to the different offset pushing the tire outward and away from the fender?

What I mean is the tire is wider and maybe doesn't have as tall as look as it did with the narrower rims.
Im hoping after getting the lift to space the tire away from the body it will look more proportional, for me anyway. Going from the +55 on the 7.5" wheels to the +25 on the 8.5's sticks me out about an inch more or so which is fine.

I see, that's what people around here refer to as "poke", or how much it pokes out from the fenders. Your current setup with the methods is probably the most popular. Raising the suspension will pull the front wheels in slightly but not the back, but you can always go back to stock. Even if you sold the OE wheels most would make that trade with cash on top for the methods.

Btw the increased "poke" is supposed to be ideal for larger tires especially off road. Also, you'll probably wanna upgrade those mudflaps to a set of Arks or something if you end up keeping that setup. They OEM barely does the job at stock offset.

I like stock much better, but I pretty much don’t like any aftermarket wheels in general.

Every tire model and size has a specified wheel width range, per the manufacturer. Running a wheel on the wider side of that range can give a bit better road handling, at the expense of offroad performance (especially when aired down). Vice-versa for a narrower wheel.

"Poke" is created by tire width and the offset of the wheel. Wheel width does not have any impact on "poke".

Guess what will go through your mind after the lift… I need 35” tires now. :)

I installed 285/70/17 wildpeaks on my 0 offset wheels immediately after I purchasing my truc with stock suspension. This is My first truck ever and km contemplating going 35” but with the zero offset I’m certain to trim.

True, generally when wheel width is increased, the added width is "inside/car side" of the centerline of the wheel. You can increase width and have the same offset.

ie 17x7.5 +45 vs a 17x8.5 +45, same offset, just more wheel inside the fender.

I also run 17x8.5 and it looks awesome - I think that’s what you should be running for 285s anyway.

When wheel width is increased and offset stays the same, half of the width change is on the inside of the wheel and half is on the outside of the wheel.

But on trucks like ours, the tire is always wider than the wheel. So the wheel may get wider, but the tire stays in the exact same place.

"Stance cars" with stretched tires that are narrower than the wheel gain more poke with more wheel width.

This calculator is accurate and a great tool. Notice that wheel width is not a variable:

so what is the maximum tire width can my 17x8.5 wheels accommodate? Can I safely go to 315?

True but just because you have a big wheel doesn't mean you will for sure poke.

I have 17x9.5 +45 TE37SL on my WRX hatch but it doesn't poke because of the +45.

I've found it takes almost nothing to get "flush" fitment on these truck if you have an SR/SR5. 265s on 17x7 sticks out a little beyond the fender.
