We have some dyno time scheduled to evaluate some different settings. Once confirmed we'll validate in the real world. I think we'll have something by June/July, but that's honestly just me taking a stab at a date for you. I promise it's not just a tease!

Great question!

With the 4G Tacoma, we’ve revised the tuning approach due to the ECU’s completely different control strategy. Unlike the 3G Tacoma, which used direct throttle angle targets, the 4G Tacoma (along with the 6G 4Runner, etc.) employs a torque-request-based throttle control strategy.

To adapt to this, we’ve implemented a new throttle control method and updated our naming conventions accordingly. Our current throttle settings are:

• Stock – Retains 100% OEM throttle control/sensitivity.
• Base – A slight increase in throttle response/sensitivity.
• Enhanced – A moderate boost in throttle response/sensitivity.

Note: Drive mode-specific adjustments are made independently based on each mode’s intended use.

As for tuning, Stage 1 is our standard performance option, offering higher output compared to Stage 0 and OE Spec.

• Stage 0: Identical to Stage 1 but with a lower boost target (available on request).
• OE Spec: Designed for SR trim and manual trucks, unlocking their full OEM potential—bringing them up to 278 hp / 317 lb-ft.

Both Stage 0 and Stage 1 are full engine and transmission calibrations, enhancing turbo spool, response, and overall drivability. Meanwhile, OE Spec retains stock calibration but removes factory detuning, restoring the original full-output OEM code.

@JustDSM If you applied the OE Spec tune to an Off Road Hybrid, would the result yield a non-hybrid OE engine tune with a non-hybrid OE shift map?

I have a hybrid. No problems with the engine/power availability. I absolutely hate how the transmission is mapped. In my experience it tries to run at lower rpms than what the gas only model would do. (1300 rpm vs 1600 rpm @ 40-ish mph) Creates lots of vibration/shuttering at that speed. Drives me nuts. That's all I'm looking to fix.

The OE Spec calibration is only an option for the SR trim trucks which come from the factory in a "detuned" state lowering their output to 228hp from the 278hp of the higher trims on the gas models.

We don't detune the Hybrid trucks for a lower specific output, sorry!

What drive modes do you have issues with? We remap the hybrid models with their own specific transmission tuning compared to the gas models. While our calibration and shift scheduling aren't a massive departure from OE values, they are more in line with what you're looking for.

You seem to be looking for something VERY specific and without really getting deeper into it (and looking at data from how you're driving) it's very difficult for me to provide an answer of exactly what will happen/when. Many of the events you're looking to change are based on accelerator pedal input and output shaft speeds making the question you're asking quite difficult to nail down. It's not in our interest to mislead you into a sale and tell you it will absolutely cure your problem. Given what you've said here, I do think our calibration is certainly more in line with what you're after, but is that "enough" I can't say. We developed the shift schedule and other areas of the calibration to all work in harmony, so piecing it together is generally not the best approach.

I'm not going to be able to disclose specifics on our calibration details, but I can share some generalities and say all upshifts will generally be commanded at a higher RPM compared to the OE calibration for just about all conditions in normal and eco on the hybrid. You'd find the tuned hybrid shift points to be more similar to the non-hybrid settings (though in some instances a little higher).

I'm confident you'd enjoy the tune, but if you're looking for something ultra-specific, it might not be exactly what you're looking for. If our Stage 1 calibration isn't your flavor, we could do a custom trans tune for you.

Our custom rate is $100/hr and we'll rework things to your liking as long as we're not doing something that would ultimately be detrimental to your safety or the vehicle itself.

Any idea how long a custom adjustment might take, ballpark? (likely less than a full day or multiple days?) And where would that take place?

No troubles!

Stage 0 will come with the same transmission tuning as Stage 1.

The amount of time it takes for a custom trans tune really comes down to how well you're able to communicate what you're after (we can talk offline about what information we need from you to make an effective change) and how far your changes take us from our starting point. I have a pretty good idea of what you're after, so I don't think we'd have issues there.

One important thing to remember is that you can't just command the ECU to shift at a specific RPM; the logic is a bit more complex than that, so we model what we want to achieve, and we work with you to to dial that in until it's working as you intend.

We can often get it there on the first revision, but sometimes it takes 2-3 revisions depending. It's not something that should take multiple days or anything like that.

Please be sure to mention you've spoken with me regarding your transmission tuning and let them know to contact me for specific details if they have questions. Has anyone reported fuel mileage change after doing the stage 1?
Would be interested in what the highway mileage is after.
I just believe it should be better and Toyota is just holding back for 1 of many reasons
I mean, when full size four door 4x4 F150s in v6 and v8 are doing as good "or" better surely something is WRONG js......
