Oil change on low mileage

I have a 2025 trd pro with only 1800 miles. Should I change oil based on time or mileage? I have read that you should at least change once a year if mileage per year is very low???

Most people around these parts are gonna recommend a break in oil change ~500-1,000 miles & then regular oil changes every 3-5k.

Time and mileage should both be considered imo. If you don’t drive much, changing it before hitting a specified mileage would be wise. Since we all have turbos in our trucks I’d do it much sooner than waiting a year (even 6 months may be pushing it a little). Also agree w/ what @maxx075 said above—— did my break-in OC @ 859 mi.

I’m doing 6 month / 5k miles. Whichever comes first. Some do sooner and some later. Definitely don’t wait 10k miles like Toyota recommends with the turbos.

Based on actual objective testing, so not subjective beliefs or "that's how it's been done since 1950" kind of reasoning, the Toyota recommended intervals are fine; used oil analyses support this. That said, if you want to change it earlier for peace of mind, have at it. I changed mine at like 7500 miles, and the oil looked surprisingly new.

A break-in oil change is popular. I did one around 1,000 mi / 1,600 km. The engine is broken-in by then. An early oil change helps remove materials leftover from assembly and parts seating. A new filter is nice. It's not a requirement. Something good to do. A nice start.

Once a year oil changes are not unusual for a low-mileage vehicle. One thing to be mindful of is how those miles are accumulating.

If you tend to take multiple, short trips, when the drivetrain doesn't tend to get fully-heated up, I feel it's best to not make that a trend. There's additional fuel wash when the engine is warming up. Internal condensation might not completely cook off. Oils do have additives in their packages to combat this, and they becomes spent over time.

If you find you're taking those short trips, drive the long way occasionally. Or get up on the highway once in a while and stretch the truck's legs and get it hot. It's OK if the truck sits. Given a sitting truck or one that has a handful of short runs to move things around, it's better to let it sit until you need to go somewhere.

Otherwise, follow the maintenance schedule. Any of the leading oil brands are fine. The factory Toyota filter or leading filter will be good. To compliment that, Toyota recommends the driver use a Top Tier (high detergent) fuel. I select the highest octane available.

I've done oil/filter changes in all of our Toyota's at 5,000 miles or every 6-months, whichever comes first....but none of them are turbocharged. (And, for my daughter's GDI engine in her Hyundai Palisade, I change that oil every 6-months or 3,000 miles and it, still, looks very dirty).

My wife is retired and doesn't put but around 1,500 every 6-months on her Corolla but doesn't matter....gets changed.

I don't have my Taco Turbo yet but probably going to, also, be doing every 3-months or 3,000 miles. (After her break-in oil change around 750 miles.)

I too am a 1000 mile break-in kinda guy. Regardless, Toyota's minimum requirement says once a year.

Every 6 months if you don't hit the mileage interval. The issue is moisture accumulation.​

I would change it at the 1 year mark if you are doing that low of miles a year.

My wife has a '25 Corolla Hatchback Nightshade she's had for almost 18 months. Just hit 5k miles. It gets an OC every 6 months.

I changed both new vehicles (2025 Tacoma and 2026 Lexus RX350) at 500 miles, then every 3500 miles, then have the oil analyzed. Having good baselines now, I have the oil analyzed every 10,000 miles. But to your question, I did the Lexus at the 1 year mark, but I doubt it really necessary at 3500 miles and one year of basically sitting, but I don't want to give Toyota any ammunition if "something" comes up either. The Lexus is seldon driven, When it is, my wife makes really short trips. That's the only reason I have any concerns at all. We take the truck if we're together going going somewhere. (The Tacoma is better!)
