As the title says, I’m considering getting a Tacoma and I’m coming from a Honda Civic Tyle R. My question is if it’s worth it?
The one main reason why I’m considering is because I landed a job as a sheet metal apprentice where the job sites will be mainly construction sites.
The car sits low and I would constantly be worried about getting her scratched and damaged. Not only that, I have been eyeing the new Tacoma or Tacomas in general since my father purchased a 2022 TRD Pro couple years back. I’m leaning towards getting the TRD Off Road trim for myself.
I’m at the point in my life where I think I’m done with cars for the moment and want something that would help me in the future. Maybe one day I can purchase a car again. If you were in my shoes what would you do? I know this is a question for myself to answer but I’d like to hear your inputs. I’d also like to know what’s it like having a Tacoma.
Thanks in advance!

You should test drive one, and include parking it. There will be less visibility around the vehicle and less maneuverability. If you feel like you can adjust to that, it might be a good option for you.

It sounds like your current vehicle simply no longer fits your changing lifestyle and career needs. Moving to construction sites means you need ground clearance and utility, making the Type R not ideal for daily work needs.

If you are fully set on getting a pickup truck, the Tacoma is a great choice. Since your dad has one, you already know how reliable and capable these trucks are. Instead of questioning if you should buy a truck, you should shift your focus to which configuration fits you best. Also, you should be thinking about whether a pick up is best for you for something more enclosed like the 4Runner since you need a vehicle for your everyday life not just on Construction sites

If you have uses for a truck, you’ll love having one. I kept my ‘23 Integra 6MT since I love driving it and am grateful to have it.

Let’s say you buy a Tacoma. If you can keep the Type R at least a few months after getting a truck, you can decide whether to keep the Type R or sell it.

Coming from a 600hp integra, and a FBO stage 1 tune 330i, its definitely worth it. I do a lot of camping with my family so its much more convenient for me to have a truck than a sports car. sometimes i wish i would have gotten a truck a long time ago.

I used to own a Challenger and a Corvette. My Challenger was my daily driver and my Corvette was my weekender and I made the transition out of necessity because I leave in Colorado and the roads are terrible and cause havoc on my vehicles, besides since I am retired I needed a more practical vehicle to haul stuff for my projects at home so I went with the Tacoma Trailhunter and I love it. I ended it getting rid of both because honestly I hate to have a vehicle sitting in the garage not being use. So now I only have one daily drive, my Tacoma, which is great to handle the terrible roads in Colorado, the occasional snow, and my hauls for my weekend projects.

You came to the wrong forum if you thought anyone would say "no it's not worth it" 🤣

I'm all seriousness though, I agree with the other posts. If you need a truck to do truck stuff, a Tacoma is a GREAT truck to do that in. I came from a full size Silverado and I'd never go back. The Tacoma is big enough to do truck stuff but small enough to keep the driving fun. Go for it!

I appreciate all of your feedbacks! Sounds like it’s totally worth it. Hopefully in the next coming months I can see what’s available. Always been a fond of the truck scene, especially the crazy builds. Don’t know much of the terms like overlanding but I’ll learn lol

I made the exact same switch coming from a FL5. I had both at the same time, very different purposes but I do enjoy dallying a truck more.

But don't buy it if you're gonna drive it like people drive Civics. You have to drive like an adult now.
Jokes aside. Do it. Best deals are at the end of the month. I've been happy with the SR5 and building it out now I want it as time/money allows. Love the truck !

Well, a Tacoma is a bigger target.

If you want a truck, buy one, but not for that reason.

If you get the manual - yes 100 percent worth it. For me, the manual is the difference between regular traffic and the enthusiast's choice.

Oh yeah for sure, just one of the reasons. I lowered my FL5 and yeah it’s a beast grocery getter but suspension is so stiff I didn’t mind when I was younger (Acting like 28 is old lol) but when I see my father’s TRD pro and I’m like man, that truck is badass. I see how much more uses he gets from it.
I’m planning on moving out with my fiancé in the future and I just see a truck more fitting. She’s getting a RAV4 since her Corolla got totaled and seems like a Tacoma is the way to go with my lifestyle changes.
Yeah ima miss how fast my FL5 is but ima be honest, I don’t drive it hard at all, I just commute and mainly drive sensible. I rip it like once a week on an empty road and that’s like for 5 sec bc I don’t want to endanger myself or others.

If I didn’t explicitly need a truck bed then I’d lean towards a 4Runner. Day to day I don’t need the full (long) bed capability, but there are often enough times that it warranted a truck over a SUV. For reference, prior to my Tacoma, I had a 3rd gen 4Runner with 330k+ miles. That said, I love both vehicles.
