This is such a great thread. Led to me getting the Dobinsons 821s installed on my '24 DCLB OR. Just had the work done so have yet to get all my gear on -- it's crazy how much the rear sits up without any payload, even with a 2.5" lift in the front. Will have to measure, but iirc the guy at the 4x4 shop mentioned about a 5 inch increase on the fender height from stock (of course due to the tires as well.)

2024 Tacoma Dobinsons Coil Spring Rear Suspension Upgrade (C59-819V) Installed on 2024 TRD Off-Road Longbed IMG_1102.JPG

I don't think I'll quite hit 1000 lbs for the payload, but should be close. Was originally leaning more toward 819s, but they've been on backorder for quite some time and it seems like a couple of you guys here are happy with the heavier spring. I hope it was the right choice.

I stupidly ordered a pair of 822 front springs as well (in anticipation of a steel bumper and winch), but turns out they are not compatible with my suspension kit (they should work on a stock setup). Should've called King and talked to them prior to just impulsively getting the springs.

Anyway, I'm past Dobinsons' return window by about a week so if anyone is interested in these, shoot me a message, because they're now for sale. Red, new in box 822s (C59-822R)

So did everyone swap out these coils without changing their rear shocks? I know generally the idea is that we are compensating for the extra weight in the rear end, and therefore not getting a lot of lift compared to a stock unloaded truck, but given that the Dobinsons website is still saying I should be getting 1.5” of lift I was wondering whether I would need a longer rear shock?

I've probably read every post out there wrt rear coil swaps and I'm not aware of anyone replacing the shock due to length issues. Now, some might have replaced the shock just because they were completely upgrading the whole suspension with something like a King suspension, but that's a different use case.

In my case I originally installed the Westcott Designs rear spacer, which added an inch to the rear. No issues with the shock travel but once I started adding weight the spacer was no help. I replaced the spacer with the 819V spring and have about an inch of lift, so almost exactly where I was with the spacer, but I'm also probably carrying well over 1,000 lbs of weight. If I had it to do over I probably should have went with the 821V but I was the first to try the springs so there was a bit of guessing going on. Bottom line though, a one to two inch lift on the back seems fine with the stock shock.

Hi there,

After reading this whole thread I think I am leaning toward the 817 coils. Hoping for some feedback from those who have installed new coils before I purchase. Stock suspension, just want it to not slam the bump stups all the time. Very light off road use, generally just kids and the shell.

2025 TRD OR Premium 5ft bed - and here is my usual load for trips etc.
  1. RSI Smart Cap ~ 180lbs
  2. Rubber Bed Mat ~10lbs
  3. Thule Bike Rack w/ 2 bikes ~120lbs
  4. Dog ~95lbs
  5. Cooler/Bags ~200 lbs
Total weight without passengers ~605lbs give or take (passengers ~450lbs)

I may occasianally have a dirt bike on hitch rack which would be about ~300lbs of weight. But this would be without all the stuff listed above, jsut the bed cap.

I really dont want much of rake. Am I a 817 or 819 guy? Or airbag guy?

Thoughts?
Thank you in advance.

I'd think for a fairly regular 600lb payload, you'd want the 819s. With the 817s, you're probably looking at about a 1.25" lift in the rear with just the smartcap on there and nothing else, and maybe it'll be level with everything else loaded, but I think there's a good chance you could be sagging. Hard to say and I'm no expert.

That's a big dog!

The dog ended up being much larger than expected!

I am fine with 1 inch higher in rear, just didn't want it to look like a Gasser dragster from the 60s. Also, I think with the dirt bike leveraged out there on the hitch, that would likely make the 817 sag.

My thoughts. I have a canopy/camper, and a heavy rear bumper with gas/tire swing outs. Dobinsons recommended the 819's. I wanted about 2" lift. I didn't get it. The 819's compensated for the weight, but no lift. I swapped in 821's with a 1/2" spacer. Much better.

I think the weight recommendations from Dobinsons are optimistic. I would recommend the 819's.

Indeed, thank you so much @gofastdan . I have been having a debate this past few days of what to do with my setup. With the little weight normally carry, the trucks rear is way too high with the 821s.... and dropping another inch with the 819s sounds enticing... but then I start thinking about the 817 and the fact that those I may not need to deal with a lift in the front makes is sound so much "gooder" ... but I just loaded my truck for our trip this weekend and the rear came down about another inch with the extra weight and I love the fact that its ass is not on the ground (as opposed to not having the 821s) and it makes me go back to I rather do the 819s. I am also concern with the decreased articulation that stiffer springs present vs software.. and I go back to the 817 as the best options... Obviously, I need to make a decision soon.... 819s with a 1.25 front lift, 817 with no lift but may drop lower as weight is added.... for camping... My weight will vary from 400 to 700 but never 1000....... your truck looks very nice... than you so much for all your responses..
Hey @elturco I'm curious how things worked out with the 817's and no front lift? I just installed the 817, and have 300 fulltime weight in the back, and I'm shocked how much added rake I have. I'm now sitting at 23.75-24" or 38.25 (from ground to fender) in the rear while the stock front's at 21.5. Did you end up raising the front (spacers) or new adjustable height shocks?
