Is there a way to keep the ICE engine on all the time and the hybrid kick in only when you need extra power. I hate it when driving in traffic and every time you stop the engine cuts off.

been discussed in length recently. one way is to turn tow/haul on when you come to a stop. otherwise I don't believe there is a way.

Coldtaco is right, turning on tow/haul will keep the ICE engine running, and you can also keep the ICE engine running if you move the gear selector to "S". Note: If you choose to use the gear selector in S option, you'll also want to move the gear selector forward and hold it there until it shows you're in 8th gear on the instrument cluster screen in order to avoid being stuck in whatever gear you were in before you moved the gear selector to S.

Sounds like you shouldn't have bought a hybrid. why are you obsessed about something it's designed for, and because of the hybrid motor, has a zero lag take off to resume?

Tow/Haul forces it to stay on but also forces other systems and settings to different presets that you might equally not like.

The very reason we did not get a Hybrid. Auto start stop is a deal breaker unless you can eliminate it without having to push the button every time you get it. On our Jeep's there was a company that built a OBD module you plug in and it would keep it disabled. I just checked and they have nothing for Toyota.

There are Auto Start/Stop eliminators that you can buy that are wired in to stop it from cutting off. Now sure how they interface with a hybrid though.

It's not even an auto start/stop like the non-hybrids. The electric motor can propel the truck without the gas engine on. Auto start/stop systems need to turn the engine on to start moving again so there is some lag. The hybrid system is more immediate especially the power from the electric motor. don't confuse the two

from my experience manual mode isn't a true manual mode. if the truck doesn't like the gear you selected it will not let you shift into that gear, which is frustrating at times, so why even offer the manual mode?

It's a gear limiter, not a manual shifter.

Our other cars are ICE non-hybrid and have auto stop (stop-start) like our hybrid Tacoma. One is a CVT and the other a manual trans.

Some of the robust OBD scan tools supposedly let the user disable Toyota’s stop-start process. Mine lets me access the process, shows an option to turn it off, but doesn’t keep it off. That said, the truck’s start-stop isn’t much of an annoyance as in the Outback and Integra.

My cousin has a new Ford Explorer and bought a wired gizmo that disabled his auto stop. He paid less than $200.

Regular stop/start systems often work really badly and I avoid or disable them when possible. The stopping of the ICE in my hybrid is so smooth that it does not cause me any issues and I don't see a need to turn it off. If you do want to turn it off your options are limited and you probably don't really want a Toyota hybrid in the first place.

I test drove a hybrid model in fair weather and haven't owned or driven a vehicle with start stop other than a few non toyota rentals. How does the HVAC fair in these trucks with their hybrid systems out of curiosity?

For a Toyota, I think my hybrid truck has very good heating and air-conditioning. Vents are all good.
The heated and ventilated seats work great.

Mostly I was referring specifically to when the engine stops. For example; the last car I drove was a rental POS kia. At around 95* and it being a dark color, it went from comfortable to swamp ass at nearly any intersection unless I shut it off. I drove a GM that was the same way, especially with several passengers. Inversely, I drove a different GM in winter and the temperature dropped in the cabin surprisingly quickly.

I see what you mean. My truck keeps the HVAC running when I’m stopped at a light or idling longer than I expected to. That’s one of the reasons I’m happy with how the HVAC is operating.
