So last couple of weeks, I drove from 4000ft to 9300 ft paved to 5500, then dirt the rest of the way up. Cat scales had me at 9300 lbs across three axles, most of which is gear in the back, the trailer axle is about 2300. You can see it sitting down in the rear. After watching this thread, I was watching the transmission temps on the way up. Its about a 35 mile dirt road, all but the last mile or so is 4HI. On this section, the tranmission temp did get about 2/3 of the way up the scale, but after I saw it start to climb past half, I shifted into the manual gears and was already in tow/haul which keeps the transmission one gear lower than normal anyway. Moving to the manual gears and shifting through these to keep the RPMs around 1900-2300 stopped the temp climb. Once I got into the 4low areas, and slowed down the temps gradually dropped. This seems to feed into the theory that the auto shifting might be what's causing the problem for some of these transmissions.

I think you're right, also the torque converter (source of majority of AT heat) is more likely to be locked the higher your RPMs are. Once its locked up the heat production will pretty much disappear, which is probably happening in 4Lo or higher RPM in 4Hi.
